The Stunning Monstera Variety That Every Rare Houseplant Collector Should Have

If you are a houseplant collector, you are probably familiar with the Monstera genus. The Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa) is a staple in many homes, with its large leaves adding flair and drama to any room. But, within the world of Monsteras, there are certain varieties that are more sought after than others. One of the rarest Monstera plant varieties you should know about is the Monstera albo (Monstera deliciosa 'Albo Variegata'). The Monstera albo has striking leaves in shades of creamy white and emerald green, with markings often appearing as splits, marbling, or stripes. You will find some specimens with half and half leaves, and others that have more subtle variation patterns. It can grow to around 13 feet in height with a spread of around 5 feet, reaching this size after 10 or 20 years.

This variety of Monstera is incredibly rare and sought after. You typically won't find them in garden centers, as they are often sold before even hitting the shelves! However, there are online retailers that you can go to (if you are willing to splurge a little). For a small Monstera albo, you are looking at spending at least $100. If you decide you want to bring one of these beauties into your home, always research the company you are buying from and look at reviews to ensure that what you are actually receiving is an authentic Monstera albo.

Caring for the rare Monstera albo

If you already have a few Swiss cheese plants in your collection, you will be well prepared for caring for this variety. Monstera albo likes a spot in partial shade, with a decent amount of bright, indirect light. It prefers moderate to high humidity, so you may want to look at ways you can increase humidity for indoor household plants, such as humidifiers or pebble trays. Water your Monstera albo regularly when it is growing and ensure that you are keeping it moist in the winter months. Like your other monsteras, this plant enjoys a warmer environment of 60 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Because of its white patches that contain less chlorophyll, Monstera albo grows more slowly than other varieties. To make sure your Monstera albo reaches its full potential, it is helpful to give it a liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Wipe the dust from its leaves regularly and stake your Monstera plant if it is looking a bit heavy. This will reduce the chance of the stems breaking. If it needs repotting, do so in the spring. With love, support, and the right care, your rare Monstera albo plant will thrive, making you the envy of every houseplant collector!
