How To Get Your Closet Organized On A $20 Dollar Tree Budget
Closet organizer systems can be a God-send for the chronically cluttered. The problem with many of these systems, however, is the expense. Some of them cost $200 or more. And while they may free your space from the copious amounts of stuff that seem to accumulate, they also free your wallet of some hard-earned cash. If you're interested in something that doesn't take all of your money, then you might want to hack a few Dollar Tree items and make your own closet organizer system. Aside from costing you around $20 or less, this budget-friendly closet organizer system is as customizable as any of the more expensive systems you'll find.
Some of the items you'll use for this budget-friendly Dollar Tree hack are logical, given what you're doing. That is, you'll need a couple of packages of Essentials Black Plastic Adult-Sized Hangers. These come in bundles of seven hangers, in black or white. Closet Essentials Storage Tote Boxes with Handles keep the smaller, knick-knacky items in your closet under control, as do a few of Dollar Tree's plastic compartmentalized boxes. Those you'll find under the Tool Bench brand in the store. This hack also calls for a few of the assorted types of hooks you usually find at the discount store, like over-the-door hooks. As for some of the more unconventional items you'll need for this, grab a few Essentials White Wire Dish Drying Racks to create a stylish closet organizer at the bottom of the space. You may also want to grab a hanging travel bag with a hook.
Building your Dollar Tree closet organizer
Start the reorg by tossing items you don't use. If you're not sure what to toss out, try using the Rule of Three. This organizational rule asks you to find three different accessories to wear with each item or to think of three separate times you'd wear something. If it's a single-use/ single-function item, get rid of it. It'll make organizing your closet less expensive. You won't need to buy totes or hangers for the items you toss, thus saving you cash.
Next, put all of your clothes on hangers, sorted by function. If you have smaller items like socks or underwear to store (and no dresser), use either a Closet Essentials Hanging Travel Bag With Hook or some of the soft foldable bins. The travel bag can hang on the bar in your closet, and the foldable totes should fit in the storage rack above the bar.
And speaking of totes, they're an ideal place for items like gloves and other seasonal items. If you typically store your electronics in your closet, then you'll want to fill up a few of the Tool Bench Hardware Plastic Compartmented Storage Cases with those items. Once filled, toss them into the soft bins in the overhead space to keep them neat and tidy. Finally, hang up some over-the-door hangers and hook your baseball caps and purses onto each hook. As for the wire dish racks, they become an unconventional way to store your shoes. Just place a few in the bottom of the closet. Insert the toes of your shoes into the slots to keep them separated.
