HGTV's Erin Napier has never been afraid to go bold with her designs, just as long as she's making her clients' dreams come true. In a kitchen from Season 8, Episode 20 of "Home Town," the Mississippi interior decorator switched things up and livened up a neutral color scheme with a statement teal farmhouse sink to echo the house's 1970s architectural roots, when colorful plumbing fixtures weren't a gutsy choice, but a common trend.
"It was risky," she confessed (per HGTV), but it paid off, as the delighted homeowner gushed over the daring choice. To keep the space cohesive, Napier then referenced the color in a chic subway ceramic tile backsplash and a playful, nature-inspired wallpaper that lined the back of a glass-front cabinet. The rooms leading up to the kitchen also featured walls in soft jade and wheat colors, making sure the entire house flowed seamlessly. The HGTV mainstay previously explained her carefree approach to color, telling Homes and Gardens in 2023, "When it comes to using bolder colors in a room, you just have to not care about other people's opinions." She added that it didn't matter if you changed your mind a few years in the future. If you love it now, dare to try it.
How to recreate this bold Erin Napier kitchen
In this Home Town design, Napier chose shaker-style cabinets in a cream shade with light green undertones similar to Behr's Chanoyu. This provided the perfect background to allow the oceanic color of the sink and backsplash to truly pop. The sink isn't the only nod to the past, as teal and cream are a color combination closely tied to 1970s-inspired kitchens.
The lucky homeowner from this HGTV episode was especially in love with the "rich" backsplash, which Napier also described as "expensive." Its lush appearance is partly owed to its beautiful, deep color, but also the dark grey nuances that fill it with a sense of movement and texture. The LuxeCraft Arteko Deep Teal Glazed Wall Ceramic Tile, available at Home Depot, is a great option to recreate this look.
The countertops appear to be engineered stone or porcelain, mostly white with subtle gray veining that gives them a marble-like look. They complement the rest of the design without clashing with the more colorful fixtures. As for the cabinet wallpaper, Napier went with Mandeville Blue Teal Tropical Paradise Wallpaper from fellow HGTV stars Drew and Jonathan Scott's home furnishing line, Scott Living. It used to be available to buy at Home Depot, but is currently out of stock.
All about the sink
The farmhouse sink is the clear focal point of this HGTV kitchen. This large, bulky, exposed-front design was originally conceived for heavy farm work, including both cooking and laundering. Today, farmhouse sinks are often chosen for their visual impact, though their wide, deep basins still offer practical benefits for busy home cooks.
Instead of being framed by countertop surface on all sides, the farmhouse sink extends beyond the front edge of the cabinetry, which facilitates access and maximizes space for washing dishes and other convenient household chores. Napier opted for an undermount, meaning the sink is slotted under the countertop, with the latter concealing the sink's rim at the back and on both sides. Sinkology's Bradstreet Farmhouse Apron Front Undermount Kitchen Sink, available at Home Depot, has a similar design, though the color is not as striking as Napier's bold teal.
While they have the ability to completely transform the look of your kitchen, there are some things to know before splurging on a farmhouse sink. They take up more space than regular sinks, which is not ideal for small kitchens. Similarly, their heavy build may not be supported by every cabinet structure. If opting for an undermount like this Napier kitchen, be prepared to spend a little extra, too, since this particular installation requires incredible precision and specialized skill.
