You've Probably Never Thought To Use An IKEA Pegboard Like This

Some of us do best with organizational systems where everything is visible, and this is where pegboard systems shine. These flat boards support tools, attachments, or other objects attached with pegs to a uniformly spaced grid of holes, so you can grab frequently-used objects without derailing your focus as you scramble to find them. Pegboards are versatile, save space in tight corners, and cut down on attention drift, making them a go-to solution for organizing your home when you have ADHD. You may already know some common places to use pegboards for your organizing needs, but they also come in handy in lesser-known spaces, like inside drawers or cabinets, in bathrooms, or behind doors.

The SKÅDIS line of pegboards at IKEA includes a variety of sizes and colors, making the product suitable for a variety of hacks which can bring intuitive organizing to every inch of your space. You can buy free-standing pegboards, sets with accessories, and colorful boards that can be mounted to walls. They include a bar that you can attach to the back for easy hanging, but if you're mounting them to a wall, as many DIYs call for, you'll also need to find or buy screws or other hardware. Depending on how large the board is, and whether you're buying attachments as well, the price can range from $18 to $69. Keep in mind that some projects involve using multiple boards.

Add some privacy to your home office setup

There are many IKEA pegboard hacks to make working from home simple and more organized, but you may not have seen them used quite like this: on top of an L-shaped desk or another piece of office furniture to function as a divider between your work space and someone else's. Use the SKÅDIS free-standing peg board, which comes with feet to keep it standing upright, for this, or secure a board onto furniture with connectors, also sold by IKEA. Of course, add shelves and bins so it will work as both a screen and a place to store office essentials.

Sliding storage near a stacked washer and dryer

In some apartments and small homes, there's an awkward gap between the wall and the washer and dryer, often stacked in a built-in cabinet. Add extendable storage by installing a pegboard on mounted drawer slides. Product designer Aden Wang accomplished this with two SKÅDIS pegboards; he joined them with mending plates before attaching the drawer slides to their backs and the wall. You may need a drill with a right angle attachment in this tight space. Add accessories onto the pegboard to hold laundry pods, rags, and other supplies.

Make a propogation station wall

Displaying houseplants is a task made easy with pegboards, thanks to shelves that you can attach and remove. Turn any wall into a plant wall by mounting the board, then place small pots in 3 ½-inch deep SKÅDIS shelves or hang baskets from hooks that fit into the pegs. This hack works for a propagation station, since the plants will be small enough to fit comfortably. You can also mount it behind a plant shelf with fully grown plants, using the shelves on the pegboard to corral supplies like your watering can and fertilizer.

Create colorful storage under the stairs

Since SKÅDIS pegboards are made of fiberboard, you can cut them at an angle to fit in irregular spaces like underneath stairs, holding office essentials and hiding cord clutter. Instagram user @grillodesigns fit a pegboard into an under-the-stairs office, sanding and spray painting the board for a colorful accent. For the best results when you're cutting, use a circular saw with a fine carbide-tipped blade, and put on a face mask and goggles to protect yourself from dust. You can also paint the wall behind the pegboard for a matching or contrasting look.

Attach to a table for sensory play

With an IKEA SKÅDIS pegboard, a kid-height table, and everyday items, you're close to creating a sensory play area for your toddler or child. Parents and teachers have discovered the SKADIS can be attached to one side of an IKEA FLISAT children's table, which has removable tops and spaces to store all sorts of items for hands-on play (even water!). The pegboard can hold more supplies, like cups of different sizes containing sand or beans kids can experiment with pouring. Use SKADIS connectors to turn the two pieces into one useful play station.

Keep tools neatly in a bookcase

The SKÅDIS pegboard fits perfectly into the back of a BILLY bookcase, another IKEA lovers' favorite, so some DIYers have bracketed the board into the top section of their bookcases to store tools or other useful things behind the glass panel. You'll need the pegboard as well as your own screws and brackets. Remove the top shelf and any supporting pins, install the brackets, set the board on top, and secure it with washers and nuts. Add hooks, hang everything up, and close the doors so everything's in reach but not obtrusive.

Assemble a little art area

You can do more than use a pegboard to keep kids' toys neat and organized. Take it to the next level by following a DIY from Instagram user @modernity.focus, who installed a SKÅDIS pegboard into the back of IKEA's BERGIG book display. The DIY children's art station was created by attaching a drawing paper roll to the top of the board and a piece of wood below, the pegboard being the perfect storage spot for craft supplies. Alternatively, you could adapt this idea to an adult-height desk to make a creative haven.

Create a powerful charging station

You may have seen IKEA pegboards used to corral video game controllers and other tech gadgets, but did you know you can also build a charging station with them? YouTuber Alicia Powell did this by attaching a power supply to the board with velcro tape and then fastening the electronics that need to be plugged in onto the board with SKÅDIS hooks or SKÅDIS elastic cords, tidily anchoring the power cords to the side with zip ties. Trays attached to the button of the wall-mounted board can hold frequently-grabbed things like smartphones.

Make van life more organized

There are many little things to keep in order if you have a camper, caravan, or recreational vehicle. You can cut pegboards into shape and mount them to a back wall of such a vehicle, then add 3 ½-inch deep SKÅDIS containers onto pegs. This setup lets you store first aid supplies, nonperishable food and coffee, or whatever you need nearby in your travels.

Bring a salon look to your vanity

If you take a SKÅDIS pegboard and attach clear shelves onto it in rows, you can easily fit many jars of powder or nail polish. Attach it to the wall above a vanity or just prop it up, since these boards come with a bar that gets fastened to the back to keep them level. Not only will everything for your makeup routine be kept together, the hack creates the look of your own nail studio or beauty bar. Why not arrange them in a rainbow order for an extra pop of joy?

Give your spices a tidy home

Because SKÅDIS pegboards come in an assortment of sizes, you can fit them into cabinets. This comes in handy when you want to add a spice rack into your kitchen. Mount it onto the back of a cabinet, and you can line up spice jars inside behind dishware or cooking supplies. Depending on the side, some cutting may be needed. A kitchen wall also works well if you'd rather have the spices in sight more often. It's helpful if all your spices are in uniformly sized jars, but they don't have to be.

Reclaim wall space behind doors

It's all too easy for the sliver of wall near a door to become wasted space. You need enough clearance for the door to open, so bulky shelves are out of the question, but thin IKEA pegboards are just right. There are a few ways you can make use of a SKÅDIS pegboard here. A simple solution is screwing one, two, or several boards to the wall and hanging the items you'll need when exiting or entering your home. If you have more time, you can attach the board in between two FLISAT wall shelves. Add a few more FLISAT shelves below that to hold purses, water bottles, and more.
