How HGTV's Nate Berkus Makes Any Small Space Feel Spacious And Livable

When you are living in a studio apartment, you know that when it comes to decorating, every square foot counts. Because of that, it's important that you choose your pieces with intention. But just because you're working with limited dimensions, it doesn't mean that you can't achieve a space that's functional and chic while also still feeling spacious. In fact, getting creative with how you decorate with limited space is part of what can be a fun process, and that's exactly what interior designer and HGTV star Nate Berkus demonstrates in a recent Facebook reel. "With the right choices, even the smallest spaces can feel expansive, livable, and curated," he explains.

In the reel, the "Nate and Jeremiah Home Project" star describes how he would style a studio apartment, with only 400 square feet to work with, broken down into four sections of the home. According to him, must-haves for a smaller space include a small entry console, large storage furniture, a full-size bed, a dining table, and traditional living room furniture. Walking through each area of the home, Berkus proves that certain pieces can elevate your studio, even if you think you don't have enough room. In fact, one mistake everyone makes when decorating their studio apartment is thinking they can't style their small space graciously with elegant pieces.

Nate Berkus recommends key pieces for studio living

For the entryway, Berkus recommends a small console table with a mirror mounted above it to greet you and your guests. This entryway storage hack works in even the smallest studio apartments because it promises a usable surface while adding style and function. If you aren't into the idea of a mirror, though, you may also consider opting for a large painting instead. Berkus explains that, in addition, placing a large piece of case furniture flanked by a set of chairs in your entryway is essential, saying, "You can never have enough storage." This is especially true if your studio only has one closet.

Things get a little unconventional in the bedroom area, but stylish, nonetheless. Berkus explains that a full-sized bed paired with a tall dining table at the foot, nestled on top of a pedestal, may sound untraditional, but it works to maximize space. That's because the table doubles as a nightstand and a dining table when needed. For the bed, consider a full bed that has drawers underneath to maximize storage.

Moving on to the living room, Berkus recommends adding typical furniture — a sofa, a coffee table, and a pair of lamps. He also suggests adding a large vintage mirror or a painting to tie your living room space together. Adding a large mirror, especially in a studio, is a small living room idea to make your space seem bigger, as it naturally gives the illusion of space while creating an effortlessly elegant environment.
