Turn Affordable Dollar Tree Items Into A High-End Lamp With An Easy DIY
For master decorating dupers, few stores rival Dollar Tree. For these pro crafters, items like stemless wine glasses and strings of dainty fairy lights aren't just the facilitators of wine-drinking and Christmas crafts. Rather, those items become the components for stylish DIYs like a high-end lamp that, once assembled, resembles the luxe $400 Third & Main crystal mini lamp. However, unlike those high-end light fixtures, this Dollar Tree decor light hack boasts a price tag that's much kinder to the wallet.
You'll need the Simple Stemless Wine Glass and the Black Metal Pedestal Candleholder from Dollar Tree for this project. To light the lamp up, you'll also need a set of LED string lights. These will replace a standard light bulb on the lamp. Get out your glue gun, too.
Finally, look for a round woven basket. Dollar Tree changes its selections of baskets from time to time. In light of this, you may have to try a couple of baskets in order to find one that would work as a lampshade for this high-end mimic. Or go with a fun alternative, like a decorative small metal tin or galvanized bucket, if your vibe leans more towards industrial design decor. Regardless of what you choose, you'll want a basket or bucket that's about 6 inches tall and 4 to 5 inches wide at the base. This should be large enough to allow it to fit over the candleholder as a shade. However, test your options while you're still shopping just to be sure everything fits together.
Creating the high-end lamp from the base up
Start this DIY by constructing the lamp's base. Add a ring of glue around the rim of the wine glass. Then, position the base of the candleholder on top of the glass' lip. Line up the rim with the edges of the candleholder's base. When this step is completed, you'll have a candleholder that stands on top of a wine glass. If you'd like to add some weight to the base to keep the lamp from toppling over, fill the wine glass with some flat marbles, like the Floral Garden Ocean Blue Glass Accent Gems, before you glue the pieces together. The glass marbles keep the spirit of the lamp's crystal base while helping the piece to stay upright.
Next, wind the string lights around the two bars of the candleholder. The controller for the lights will sit on top of the stand. You may want to tape the controller down, though that's not a requirement. The basket becomes a lampshade once you place it on top of the piece.
Finally, the original Third & Main lamp comes in a couple of styles — brass and polished nickel. The metal candleholder from the Dollar Tree is black. If you'd like to add dimension, paint the base with a coat of Rust-Oleum Specialty Metallic Brass Spray. If you paint the candleholder, do it before you glue the wine glass and the candleholder together. Then, give the paint some time to dry before moving on to the other steps. Now, your DIY budget-friendly high-end lamp is ready to light up your space.
