Turn An Old Plate And Wine Glass Into A Beautiful Vintage-Inspired Cake Stand

Remember that lone Toile or Wexford crystal dinner plate that you got off Etsy? Perhaps you're not sure what to do with it. Well, here's an idea you can use to upcycle your thrifted glassware into beautiful bespoke DIY décor. This DIY hack from TikToker @jessiejanedaye will turn an old plate and wine glass into an exquisite vintage-inspired cake stand for your traditional British-inspired afternoon tea party. And all you need to do is glue a classic wine goblet to your dinner plate.

What we love most about this idea is that it can take you less than 10 minutes to create. To start, if you're already hoarding a variety of classic plates and wine glasses in your attic you only need to order waterproof glass and ceramic adhesive and you are ready to get started. Otherwise, shop charming pieces on Etsy, at thrift stores, or from a jumble or garage sale.

And remember to keep it fun. You don't have to match your vintage glass items to one particular style. Create a unique stand by mixing and matching a plate to a wine-glass that best complements it. For instance, if you have an amber wine goblet, you can pair it with a brown and white transferware dinner plate or a clear Wexford dinnerplate. But your pieces don't have to be expensive vintage items that will dent your pocket; you can go for the affordable vintage dinnerware brands that you can find at the thrift store, but even any antique-like china you thrift will do just fine. For example, a regular clear-stemmed wine glass paired with a simple porcelain plate with a floral pattern and gold trim can still exude the vintage vibe we're going for.

Transforming old glassware into a bespoke cake stand

Now that you have your design down, thoroughly pat clean all your glassware and peel away stickers, if any. If you have stubborn debris stuck on the china, soak first, then clean them. After that, apply a waterproof and robust craft glue like E6000 to the rim of your wine goblet, then press it down the middle of the bottom surface of your plate. Make sure the glass rim sits flush with your plate, and then place a heavy book as weight on top of the base of the wine glass. Leave your setup to cure overnight. With that, your vintage-inspired cake stand is ready.

If you love to experiment, you can switch up vintage–inspired glassware with other classic finds like pottery or ceramic candle sticks. You can also create a whole new look by painting or staining your pieces before gluing them together. Feel free to serve your cookies, cupcakes, and pastries on this beautiful stand when you have guests over. But with this bespoke DIY creation, it's no surprise that you may start viewing cake stands as living room decor and not just baked-goods holders.
