Turn A Dollar Tree Toolbox Into A Luxurious Makeup Storage Bin With A Crafty DIY

If your bathroom counters are covered with makeup brushes and eyeshadow palettes, making you late every morning as you rush to find that one lip gloss you just know you had yesterday, it might be time to reassess your space. You don't have to spend a ton of money to declutter, either. We have a savvy way to organize your beauty room with a crafty DIY that won't break the bank. You can make your own budget-friendly makeup case from an unlikely source — a Dollar Tree toolbox.

Of all the creative ways to repurpose an old toolbox, turning it into a makeup case probably isn't top of mind. But hear us out, it totally works. Just because your tools are blush brushes and eyelash curlers instead of screwdrivers and drill bits, doesn't mean they need to be choralled and organized any differently. Making it yourself also allows for full customization to match your style — bedazzle it to your heart's content.

For this Dollar Tree DIY to keep your vanity organized, you'll need a few items: a Tool Bench Hardware Tool Box, a small mirror, and either Crafters Square Doubled-Sided Tape or Aleene's Tacky All-Purpose Craft Glue. Optional supplies include spray paint, decorative accents like jewels and stickers, and some ribbon. Finally, to complete the project, gather the makeup items you plan to store inside.

How to DIY a makeup storage case using a Dollar Tree toolbox

To start, remove any stickers from the box and wipe it down with a damp cloth. The toolbox comes in all black with a yellow handle. You can keep it as is or spray paint it a sparkly gold or bright pink — whatever your vibe is. You can paint the exterior only, or coat the interior as well for a uniform look. If using spray paint, it's best to do it outside, but if you can't, make sure your space is well ventilated.

Once the paint is dry, you can decorate the outside with your favorite stickers, glue on some fancy jewels, or even use letter stickers to spell out your name. For the interior, we're going to glue a compact mirror to the inside of the lid, so when you open the box, you have a mirror to use when applying makeup. Dollar Tree's Luminessence Glass Mirror Candleholders can be used for this by attaching them with double-sided crafters tape or all-purpose craft glue.

When opened, the toolbox lid falls all the way back. To use the mirror without holding the lid up, you'll need to lean it against something, or you can use ribbon to hold the lid at a 90-degree angle. To do that, glue one end of a piece of ribbon to the inside of the lid and glue the other end of the ribbon to the inside of the box, so that it holds the lid in that 90-degree position. Repeat on both sides of the box for stability. Once assembled, place your makeup inside, and the organizer is ready to use.
