If you love all the innovative ways to use storage cube organizers around the house but yours are looking a little drab, don't rush out to buy a whole new organizer. You can give the ones you already have an easy upgrade with this Dollar Tree DIY. With just a couple DT finds and a few tools you probably already have around the house, you can turn your dated storage cube — or any storage container or drawer — into a stylish, fluted box. Who says storage cubes can't be both functional and cute? They're the clutter wrangling hack even Joanna Gaines uses to elevate home storage and organization.

To upgrade your cubes, you'll need to grab some Crafters Square wood dowels (enough to cover the front of the cube) and a bottle of wood glue, both of which can be found at Dollar Tree. While you're there, you can also grab a sanding block with sandpaper, which you'll use to round the flat edges of the dowels. That's really all you'll need for the basic DIY, assuming you're using a standard cube storage box. If you're using a different size box, you might want to cut the dowels to size, in which case, you'll also need a pair of side cutters or a miter saw, if you have one, to adjust the height of the dowels.

How to turn a boring storage cube into a chic fluted box

Transforming your old storage cube into a stylish fluted box is a simple way to make cube storage look more mature. Begin with an empty storage cube on a clear working space like a table or crafting desk. To create a fluted front to the cube, we're going to line the dowels up vertically and glue them across the surface of the cube, one right up against the next. An optional step, before glueing them to the cube, is to use the sandpaper on the tops of each dowel, giving it a more rounded, finished look. Leave the bottoms flat so they are flush with the bottom of the cube. Then glue each dowel to the cube, placing them as close together as possible, so you cannot see the cube through the dowels.

At this point, you can be completely done with the project and enjoy your upgraded flute style storage cube. Optionally, you can add any type of pull to the front, like these self-adhesive dresser knobs, since the dowels will have covered up the handle that most cubes come with. If you are using a different sized box, you can adjust the height of the dowels as needed, with side cutters or a miter saw, and sand the edges down with sandpaper. Then glue them onto the box just like you would've done the cube. This can also work with the front of a drawer. Just make sure that the tops of the dowels are flush across the top and bottom so the drawers can fit into their space.
