The DIY Way To Give Any Glass Mirror A Steamy, Foggy Look

If you love the look of a steamy bathroom mirror after a hot bath, we have just the DIY for you. By using a can of frosted glass spray paint, you can turn any old mirror into a trendy wall art for any room in your house. The idea isn't just to cover the mirror in frosted glass paint, though. Instead, you'll use masking tape to create a stencil on the glass. When the stencil is removed after applying the paint, it will leave a note or design on the surface, as if you'd written on it with your finger after a shower. Feel free to be creative here: messages, patterns, smiley faces, or any drawing you like will work.

To begin this quirky DIY, you'll need a wide roll of masking tape and a sharp blade, such as a utility knife, to cut the stencil. You'll also need to scoop up a can of Krylon Frosted Glass Spray Paint (or another brand if you prefer), an extra-broad marker, and a mirror as your base. This DIY is a great way to upcycle old mirrors around the house or transform a thrifted find. You could opt for a large piece or cluster small mirrors together. It can even be done on small table mirrors, like IKEA's KARMSUND. Either way, it's sure to jazz up your space without breaking the bank.

How to DIY a frosted glass mirror art piece

The first step is to create your stencil. To do this, apply a layer of masking tape all over the mirror and use your marker to draw your design or write your note on the tape. Don't have a wide-tip marker? Dip your finger in paint or an eyeshadow palette as an alternative. Once that's done, trace the outline of each letter or drawing using your utility knife. Remember that the blade will likely scratch the mirror, though it's not an issue since these edges will be frosted. Still, it's best to try to keep a gentle hand to avoid the scratches being too deep and visible.

From there, remove the tape around the cuts — meaning only your design should be covered with tape at this point. The masking tape shouldn't leave too much residue behind as long as it isn't left on the surface for more than a few days. Nonetheless, you can use a bit of glass cleaning spray and a microfiber cloth to clean around the stencil and remove any dust, residue, or fingerprints, ensuring your paint job has a streak-free finish.

Next, apply an even layer of spray paint all over the mirror so it becomes foggy. When the paint is dry, peel off the remaining tape to reveal a steamy mirror effect that looks like it's been scribbled on. You can have tons of fun with this DIY. For example, stencil droplets falling from the letters can make it look extra realistic. Another option is to draw wipe marks, as if you'd removed some of the steam with your hand after a hot shower. Or, why not use hard glue to create 3D droplets over the mirror?
