There is nothing quite like taking a moment each morning to select your daily accessories from a vintage jewelry box. The ritual of lifting the lid and looking through your neatly-stowed trinkets to find the perfect ones can add a little sparkle to your day, whether you're enjoying a slow Sunday or in the middle of a weekday rush. Finding the right vintage piece for your style and budget can be tricky, but thanks to a savvy TikToker, crafting your own vintage-inspired piece is easier (and more budget-friendly) than ever. In her video, @anastasha_art sands down a wood box from the Dollar Tree, paints on a stunning deep teal color, then applies a flower transfer to the lid. After sliding in a piece of colorful cardstock into the bottom to act as a liner, her new piece is ready to go.

The secret to this DIY's success lies in the box. Not only is Dollar Tree's Square Small Wood Craft Box affordable (currently priced at $1.25), but its wood construction acts as a great canvas for everything from paint and stains to rub-on transfers. This is also a great project to help use up that leftover peel-and-stick wallpaper you have lying around, or that last bit of chalk, craft acrylic, spray, or even latex paint. (Just make sure you have a polyacrylic sealant, like Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint, on hand to seal it afterward.) And because so many materials can be used, it's easy for DIYers, new or experienced, to create a unique, vintage-inspired jewelry storage box.

Transform a basic wood box into a vintage-inspired piece

Before we whip out the sandpaper and paints, decide which era you want to draw inspiration from for your jewelry storage. A good starting point is looking at your current decor style: do you lean more Victorian or more 70s' boho? Or are you a bit of everything?

To bring a dash of Art Deco glamour to your bedroom, lean into rich colors, gold spray paint, and stencils to add the dramatic curves and shapes of the era. To create a mid-century modern look, use metallic spray paint on the box's hardware (or swap it out) to add a touch of luxe and a medium stain on the wood for some luster. To create a Victorian-inspired piece, apply a dark wood stain, then add a floral transfer or decal to the lid. Or, mix and match your favorite elements to create a unique vintage-inspired decor item that never goes out of style.

Once you have a game plan, prep the box. The wood box from the Dollar Tree has been polished, so rough it up slightly with 120 grit sandpaper. Then, unscrew the hardware and set it aside in a bowl or bag so pieces don't get lost. Next, add some color, whether this means two coats of paint or a beautiful stain. Trust your plan and remember that if it doesn't work, you can always change it later. Once dry, apply your transfers or decals, add a layer of sealant, and reattach the hardware. Organize your jewelry inside, and enjoy!
