Upgrade Your Front Porch With A Whimsical Carrot DIY For Spring
Perhaps as a byproduct of being associated with the Easter bunny, carrots have become one of spring's most enduring decorative symbols. Carrots pop up as images on spring and holiday-themed greeting cards, as dollops of root-shaped frosting on cupcakes, and, of course, on decorative displays for the front porch. In the latter case, such decor often manifests as a happy two-dimensional sign, adorned with bunches of carrots painted down its front. However, Dollar Tree shoppers should know that a three-dimensional seasonal carrot decoration is lurking among the store's wares, just waiting to bring subtle pops of color to your porch decor. It only takes someone with a few crafting skills and the right supplies to bring the whimsical carrot DIY to fruition and get your porch ready for spring.
To make this DIY, you'll turn a Lightweight Indoor and Outdoor Portable Wave Planter into the base of the carrot. It's almost 8 inches tall — big enough to be seen from the street — though it'll get taller once you add the green carrot tops to it. Those you'll make from DT's Floral Garden Assorted Artificial Green Foliage Bushes. Carrot tops have a somewhat feathery appearance. Of the floral greenery found at the Dollar Tree, the silk fern fronds look the most similar to the real thing. However, if you'd like something more stylized, Dollar Tree also carries leafy greens in assorted colors, like light blue or silvery green as well. Finally, a glue gun is required, so have one on the ready.
Assembling the spring carrot decor display
In this DIY, you'll end up with a more balanced arrangement if you make more than one carrot. If you're not sure how many to construct, follow the rule of three. This decorating guideline suggests that displays look more pleasing to the eye if they're made up of three items, so make sure you have enough supplies for three carrots. Then, prep the bottoms of the pots so they'll hold the greenery. Bore a hole right in the middle of the bottom of the planter with your glue gun. Make it big enough to fit the stems of the greenery. Insert the stems of the ferns into the hole. You may need more than one bunch of the leaves to make the top of the carrot look lush and full, so don't be afraid to add more.
When it's time to arrange the decorations, follow the same rules you would for placing decor accents inside the house. That is, find ways to create differences in height in the arrangement. For example, if your local Dollar Tree is carrying some of its larger wooden crates, splurge on one of those to create a base for one of the carrots to sit on. Position the other two carrots in front of the crate to form a triangle. Finally, add other decorative seasonal elements, like bunnies or flowers, to make the carrots blend in with any other spring-themed or Easter decor you have on the porch. You can also use a spring interior scent to boost the energy in your home.
