Turn An Old Towel Bar Into A Space-Saving Shoe Storage Solution
If your shoe rack is overflowing and you're tired of sorting through a mountain of heels, boots, and sandals to find the right pair, it might be time to update your shoe storage situation. This creative DIY storage rack is a neat way to keep shoe clutter organized and make use of vertical space that allows you to easily see all your shoes at a glance. Your rushed work day morning routine will thank you. For this shoe storage solution, we're going to turn an old towel bar into a space-saving, wall-mounted shoe rack.
A towel bar is ideal for hanging shoes like high heels, which can be hung by their heel over the bar. Any shoe with a decent sized heel can be hung that way. Shoes without heels can be slipped between the wall and the bar. Slim sandals or large boots won't work as well on this rack and can be stored on a more traditional floor or closet rack.
To create this genius towel bar home hack that'll elevate your everyday life, you'll need a towel bar, screws, screwdriver or drill, and the mounting parts that came with your towel bar. That usually consists of mounting brackets and wall anchors. Of course, you'll also need shoes to hang on your upcycled towel bar.
How to turn an old towel bar into a shoe rack
To start, decide where you want to place your towel bar. If you currently have a floor shoe rack or simply a pile of shoes stored in an entry way, try to use wall space above that area for an organized shoe storage solution. This way all your shoes can be kept together, as opposed to some being next to the door and others in the hallway or another room.
If your towel rack is currently mounted elsewhere, remove it from the wall along with all of its attachments. Gather your tools and bring it all the new storage location. If there are no studs in the section of the wall you selected, use wall anchors to make sure the brackets and bar are secure. You can do this by drilling holes where you want the brackets to go and pushing the anchors into the holes. Then screw the mounting brackets into the wall and place the towel bar.
Once the towel bar is in place, you can hang your shoes all the way across. Optionally, you can hang multiple towel bars, spaced far enough above each other for shoes to hang in between. If you don't have a towel bar, you can also declutter and organize shoes using a curtain rod in the same way.
