A Doily And A Picture Frame Are All You Need To Create Beautiful Wall Decor

While there are countless ways to create your own beautiful wall decor, here's a very simple DIY shown in a TikTok clip from Etsy that uses just a pretty vintage doily and a thrifted picture frame to create a stunning piece of wall art, similar to the vintage-inspired wall decor idea you can DIY on a budget. 

To get started, head to your local thrift store and look for both an old lace doily and a picture frame that is large enough to surround it. You could do what the video creator did and find a suitable doily or pretty piece of lace from ForeverChicTextiles on Etsy. Alternatively, you might even have a lacy doily tucked away in a drawer or find one while you're visiting a relative. Don't worry if you end up with a collection because there are plenty of creative ways to repurpose old vintage doilies. In a pinch, you could use a piece from an old lace tablecloth that you've put away until you can find a way to upcycle it. 

Just cut carefully around a motif using pinking shears to prevent fraying and use a little Mod Podge or Dritz Fray Check to seal the edges. You'll also need a nice piece of fabric large enough to fit inside the frame. This would look best if it's a solid color, so that it really highlights the pretty lace.

The first thing you want to do is disassemble the picture frame. Cut a piece of fabric that is the same size as the glass. Paste this onto the backing board (if your frame has one) using your Mod Podge. If your frame doesn't have a backing board, you might like to cut one from a piece of cardboard, ensuring it fits comfortably inside. This will ensure that your wall art is nice and secure, and won't fall apart when you hang it. Lay your doily or piece of lace on top of the fabric, and then place the glass from the frame over this. You can glue down the doily, but this shouldn't be necessary. All that's left to do is to reassemble the frame and hang your creation on the wall.

Of course, there are plenty of ways that you can customize this stunning piece of wall decor. If the frame is quite plain and you're feeling a little artsy, you could use some ARTISTRO acrylic paint markers and draw some flowers on it. Or if you're a whiz at decoupage, you could cover the entire frame with pretty papers, matching the colors to the shade of the fabric you've used inside the picture. You could also make the art a bit more special by gluing some ribbon or braid around the edges of the fabric to really make the lace pop. You could even use this as an alternative to a boring gallery wall and place a family or vintage photograph on top of the doily.
