The Concrete Candle Holder That's So Easy To Make

Essential oil burners serve as both sconces and scent diffusers in one simple package. But despite their straightforward configuration, some crafters may feel reluctant to DIY one of these fixtures due to the risks associated with the open flame. If this sounds like you, your safety concerns can be assuaged if you construct this kind of gorgeous DIY candle holder out of non-flammable materials, such as concrete and stoneware dishes. These materials serve both practical (read fire retardant) and decorative purposes and fit in well with sleek industrial decor.

Fortunately, with just a few items on hand, there's an easy way to make this concrete candle holder. To shape the concrete into a solid base, you'll need a mold. An inexpensive, rectangle-shaped plastic container works for this purpose. Additionally, most oil burner candle holders have two dishes: one to hold the essential oils, and another to house the candle. Two small stoneware saucers fulfill these roles in this item's construction. If you're leaning into the industrial decor aesthetic, the stoneware plates can be swapped out for DOITOOL Small Stainless Steel Appetizer Plates. It's also possible to repurpose some old dishes for this DIY.

Much of the holder's elegance stems from the candle itself. An Auralome 2-Inch White Floating Candle would look lovely in this design. Its curved lines next to the sconce's rectangular concrete back wall would create an interesting visual juxtaposition. The last two items on the supply list are black electrical tape and sandpaper.

How to make the concrete candle holder

The building block for this DIY is literally a block of concrete, which you'll make by pouring some wet cement into the shallow plastic container mold. You can buy powdered cement at a home goods store. Combine it with sand and water to create the concrete mixture per the manufacturer's instructions.

Stand one of the dishes up in the cement, positioning it toward the bottom end of the rectangular container. The dish should stand at a 90-degree angle to the mold. Strategically placed tape put in front of and behind the plate and fastened to the outer walls of the mold keeps the dish upright until the cement hardens. Do the same thing with the second plate, only situate it closer to the top of the box. Give the concrete time to cure, then remove it from the plastic box. Sand any rough spots.

Stand the block on end. Place a candle on the bottom plate. Add drops of essential oil to the top dish. The balance of the piece will favor the side with the plates on it. To make the craft more stable, glue a decorative item to the underside of the bottom dish; it will keep the candle holder from falling forward. When you're choosing an object for this purpose, look for something spherical to embody the circular form of the plates and the candle — this will make the finished design look more harmonious and balanced. This Cregugua Wooden Craft Ball could do the trick.
