Take it from Drew Scott and Jonathan Scott: You truly don't want to put all your things in one basket. While all manner of bins, boxes, and crates are great for keeping the kitchen organized, as the Property Brothers advise, they can be a bit like your go-to indulgence if you don't exhibit some control. As Drew explained in a March 2026 YouTube video, "If you have a bag of chips that's this big, you'll eat the bag of chips." He moved his hands further and further apart to make his point. "If it's this big, you'll keep going." So, just as with snacking, it's smart to show a bit of restraint when packing things up for storage. "You just need to make sure that you're controlling how much you're putting into these baskets," Drew noted.

And while you're getting your fill, it's also crucial to think about what you're putting where. As the stars of "Property Brothers" shared, sometimes it's important to think inside the box. For instance, while a woven bin is ideal for soft items such as hats, gloves, and swimsuits, "Eventually this is going to clutter up and it's going to spill over," Jonathan stressed. "So know what you're putting in your baskets, and make sure that you declutter often." No matter how cute it may look on your open shelving, if the contents strain against the edges, it's not going to look clean. That's why the brothers advise that softer woven baskets are not intended for "books or heavier toys."

How to choose the right baskets to organize your space

The HGTV mainstays could make a case for most any basket, so long as it's utilized in the proper way. While Jonathan Scott acknowledged in the YouTube video that he wouldn't use a stackable acrylic bin "as decor, because it just looks cheap," they are ideal for whipping cupboards or closets into shape. "Put this inside a cabinet for kids stuff, it can be really great," Drew Scott concurred, "because you can see what you need ... But I wouldn't have this on the shelf where you can see it." And, yes, inside the playroom at the spread Jonathan shares with fiancée Zooey Deschanel and her two children, he has "so many baskets, so many bins and everything is labeled so the kids know exactly where everything goes."

In fact, beyond just holding your things, the goal of such containers is to give you the ability to hide your stuff in plain sight. That's why Jonathan isn't a huge proponent of wired baskets or anything that puts your mess on display. "When you walk into a space, your first impression should be one of calm, tasteful placement of everything that I can see," explained the contractor. "If you're putting all your crap into a basket like this, you can see the crap from the side. So I believe in making sure that you pick the right containers for the right project."

Ultimately, Jonathan's key recommendation: "Don't get baskets that you can see all the way through. Get baskets that have solid sides but still look nice."
