If you have vining houseplants and you're feeling a little artistic, there's an easy way to turn that simple plant into a big and beautiful statement piece, and all you need is some wire, a bit of patience, and time. This is one of those easy projects that you can do when it's raining outside, and you can't get into your garden. It allows you to still play with your plants and craft a gorgeous display that you're going to love. What you'll be doing is creating a heart shape using the wire and then covering this with the lengthy vines of your chosen plant. This creates a pretty topiary to decorate your home, and is just another way to add a touch of whimsy to your plants.

The first thing you'll need to do is find a suitable plant that already has some long vines. There are plenty of vining plants for your indoor space, and you probably already have one of these at home; otherwise, you can easily find one at your local nursery or garden center. Plants that work extremely well for this include ivy, asparagus fern, pothos, philodendron, and even jasmine. Basically, any trailing plant that has more than one vining stem hanging down is going to work. For the wire frame, you can get something like this Mudder aluminum bonsai training wire, or you could repurpose a metal coat hanger and bend that into shape. To make it even easier, you could get this Levery 2-pack garden trellis, which is already shaped into a circle and a heart, or you could consider this JFFX paper-wrapped floral wire for a slightly different aesthetic.

How to create your topiary statement piece

Once you've selected the plant you want to use, it's time to make your wire shape. If you've chosen a roll of wire, create a circle shape first, making sure you have two long end sections that you can insert into the soil in the pot to keep the frame upright. Push the middle top of the circle down to form the heart shape. If you're using a metal coat hanger, straighten it out first, before fashioning it into the heart-shaped frame. Of course, you don't just have to stick to the heart shape. You could fashion the wire into a diamond or even a star if you're feeling extra creative. If you find the wire a little hard to bend, just use a pair of pliers to create the shapes you want.

Next, you want to grab your plant and divide all the vines into two sections, so that you have an equal number on each side of the pot. Position your frame in the soil, taking care not to damage any roots. Starting on one side, just wind a vine around the frame and secure the end with a small hair or plant clip. Do the same with the other side, and repeat until all the vines have been wound around the frame. You can trim off any vines that are exceptionally long or continue to wind them. If you've used a coat hanger or your wire seems a bit flimsy, you can easily just wrap it with twine before inserting it into the pot. Now all that's left is to enjoy your new decorative plant display, but just remember to follow a few tips on how to care for an indoor topiary.
