Struggling to figure out how to repurpose thrifted tea cups and saucers? Bird feeders and bird baths make for easy, functional tea cup DIYs for the garden. And, of course, there are charming DIY planters you can make from old tea cups for garden decor. But you can also think a little outside the box and tap into a little childlike whimsy by turning thrifted tea cups into decorated fairy holes. Add this dainty decor to the base of a tree or an outdoor display to inspire imagination for you and your kids.

The concept of a fairy hole is simple: It's a gateway to another world, where tiny fairies live. Turn old tea cups into little abodes that look perfect for fairies to live in as a way to embrace this garden myth. For families with small children, it can be magical fun to develop your own garden lore surrounding the fairy holes you design and place in your yard.

To get started with this charming garden decor project, you will need to acquire some tea cups with matching saucers. Try checking a local thrift store for cheap ceramics. They can be as plain or as pretty as you want, because either can become fantastic fairy holes. Some of the best fairy garden ideas that are downright magical utilize materials you might have lying around the house. Items like decorative glass pebbles, popsicle sticks, and beads can be perfect to create the right fairytale vibe. Also, grab acrylic paints, super glue or a glue gun, and molding clay.

Creating magical fairy holes out of simple tea cups

To start turning old, thrifted tea cups into fairy homes, place each cup on its side on a saucer. Securely attach it to the saucer with glue. The base of the saucer becomes a little yard for the fairy home, and the entrance of the home is the wide opening of the cup. Place foil or crumpled paper into the tea cup to fill the space and enclose it with molding clay or popsicle sticks to create a flat surface to add a door or windows. Now you can begin decorating with all your creativity and imagination.

You can add a border of colored stones along the edge of the saucer. You could also attach crafting moss like Aspamms Fake Green Moss from Amazon to give your fairy hole texture. With crafting sticks or popsicle sticks, design miniature items to adorn your tea cups. For example, a simple bench painted a bright color would look adorable sitting outside the entrance to a tea cup fairy house. If you are not good with designing miniatures out of crafting sticks and molding clay, you could also buy tiny dollhouse furniture to add a little extra to your fairy homes. You can also pair your tiny fairy homes with DIYs to turn your garden into an illuminated, enchanted escape by adding lighted mushrooms or flowers nearby.
