If you regularly order in, you might have a pile of empty takeout containers stacked away somewhere in your kitchen. You'll eventually need to figure out a way of handling the overload. Fortunately, you don't have to throw them out, as there are several genius ways to reuse plastic containers in your home. One fun and creative option is to turn one into a chic storage basket. You'll be so pleased with the end result that you'll want to make many others. That way, you can designate each for storing different items, from your jewelry and hair accessories to makeup items and even craft supplies.

This is a simple project that even beginners can tackle. And while the idea is inspired by @whimsycraftss on Instagram, it's very easy to make the storage basket your own by adding your unique twist to it. Other than the takeout container, the other items you'll need for this DIY project include a beautiful piece of leftover fabric that's large enough to cover the inside of the container, jute twine, and any other embellishments you want to add. If you don't have any fabric, you can take this opportunity to repurpose old clothing in your home. You will also need a pair of scissors, clear craft glue like Cruzix B-7000 Clear Glue, and a piece of wire.

Assemble and customize your DIY storage basket

Start by lining the inside of your plastic container with fabric, allowing a bit of the fabric to extend over the outer edge. Next, cut a section of the container's lid the same size as the bottom of the container, and cover it with the same fabric. Place it at the bottom of the container. Then, cover the outer surface of the container with twine to make it look decorative. This is one of the easy ways to repurpose twine — simply wrap it around the container, using glue to fix it in place. Or, change it up by using ribbon, strips of leather, or other materials. Now, grab the wire and wrap twine around it, from one end to the other, to create a handle. Attach this twine-covered wire on either side of the container.

The last step is customizing your basket. To replicate the creator's style, roll twine into small spiral rosettes, and glue these on the sides with a pearl bead at the center. Or, make other three-dimensional flower designs using the same twine rope or burlap fabric for a rustic look. Artificial flowers glued onto the basket are another option. You could also add a more glamorous touch to your storage box by opting for colored twine rather than the familiar natural jute twine. Then, add glitzy embellishments like rhinestones or colorful beads. Or better yet, swap out the jute twine for another type of thread, like cotton yarn or silk cord, for a completely different look.

Lastly, you can create small compartments inside the storage basket and use each section to store different items. This will work perfectly if you're storing craft supplies that need to be separated by colors, like beads, thread, or embellishments.
