Why There's No Need To Waste Money On Small Throw Blankets

We're not saying that bigger is always better, but sometimes it really makes sense to live large. Take the throw blankets that get draped across beds, couches, and armchairs as an example. Not to be an, uh, wet blanket or anything, but opting for one that's on the tinier size can be a huge design mistake.  Not only will the throw look super scrawny on your big cozy sofa, but the postage-sized blanket will get visually swallowed up in a large living room. It can even shrink the entire space. Plus, if your goal is to wrap yourself in warmth, you'll want something sizable enough to cover your frame and perhaps someone else's.

While the standard size of a throw blanket is 50 inches by 60 inches, the key to finding a cozy throw blanket that will look good in every room is to expand your horizons a bit. Beth Diana Smith, CEO and Principal Designer of Beth Diana Smith Interior Design, suggested to Apartment Therapy that a 60-inch by 80-inch blanket is expansive enough to share and makes a real statement when strewn over a couch or bed. If you're still drawn to smaller throws despite this advice, another option would be to double the drama. Use two or more blankets to accent your sectional, recliner, or any other sitting — or sleeping — spot in your home. Plus, the price difference is negligible. Well-rated small throws start at around $10 each, while you can expect to spend $20 or more for oversized blankets.

How to choose the right size throw blanket for your space

Occasionally good things do come in small packages. If you're on the petite side, you might appreciate a smaller throw so that you're not drowning in fabric. The same applies if you're looking for a throw to adorn a single antique dining chair repurposed as a desk chair. However, if you're dressing a sectional or large couch, a 60-inch by 80-inch blanket is ideal in both looks and snuggling capacity. When it comes to choosing the right size throw for your bed, look for a blanket that will fully cover the whole of your bed without spilling over the sides. Usually you can achieve that perfect hygge vibe with a queen-sized blanket — something around that magic 60-inch by 80-inch mark. If you have a king-sized bed, try going even larger: 90 inches by 100 inches.

As for the material you'll be blanketing yourself in, cotton is light and breathable while a wool throw is thicker and provides a bit more warmth. Delicate cashmere feels particularly decadent as it's both lightweight and insanely soft. If you're looking for a blanket that will last, polyester is hardier and easy to clean. Or you can pick a cotton-polyester blend that offers the best of both worlds — softness and durability. No matter which material you choose, read the care label for instructions on how to wash and dry. While most throws can be washed on a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent, you'll want to take care not to ruin all that delicious coziness — especially if you tend to wash throw blankets more often in the fall. If the throw is particularly large, you might have to head to your nearest laundromat.
