The Costco Lighting Find Under $50 Users Say Is Worth Buying

Outlet covers are an important part of protecting your home's electrical plugs, but they often consist of cheap plastic and boring white or beige colors that can detract from the look of your room's design and color scheme. The good news is that there are stylish ways to hide unsightly outlets. To avoid this issue, you could select decorative outlet covers made to blend in with the design of the wall.

Another option is to stick with a neutral-colored option that almost seems to hide in plain sight while offering some extra features that improve its look. One such option, the SnapPower GuideLight LED Outlet Cover available at Costco, includes an LED light at the lower edge of the rectangular shape that provides a soft glow of light at night, giving you built-in illumination for hallways, bathrooms, or kitchens when searching for that late-night snack.

This is a "members' only" deal on the Costco website. You can purchase a three-pack for $43 with free shipping and handling. More than 81% of customer reviewers on the Costco website give the SnapPower product a four- or five-star review. One reviewer decided to purchase the covers after seeing them on social media and highly recommends them. I "fell in love with them," the reviewer wrote. "Costco had the best pricing. Easy to install [and] puts out the perfect amount of light."

Why Costco customers believe they're receiving a good value

Although you can buy several lighting options from Costco for a home refresh at a good price, customer reviewers said these SnapPower outlet covers provide an especially impressive value. They are easy to install and fit directly over your existing outlets by using a few screws. You don't have to access or adjust the outlet's wiring. Because they don't require hiring a professional installer or electrician, you'll save some money with DIY work. "Easiest install; just replace [the] existing outlet covers with these," one reviewer said.

They don't require a battery, which saves money, but this means they won't operate during a power outage. The LED has a 25-year estimated lifespan, ensuring the product will last a long time, saving money because you won't have to purchase replacements as often. The LED creates a soft glow of light while adding charm to a basic outlet with a simple DIY hack, reviewers said. The LED uses a built-in automatic sensor to turn the light on and off and adjust the intensity of the light, based on the exterior light available.

Additionally, because the installation doesn't require occupying one of the plugs to give the cover its light, you don't have to purchase a power strip to add more outlet options. A standard plug-in night light would occupy an outlet. Because these outlet covers don't extend outward from the wall like a standard night light, you don't have to worry about bumping into them when walking down the hallway or working in the kitchen.

Controlling the light output is a primary customer complaint

At less than $50, a few Costco customer reviewers said the outlet covers are well worth considering, even if they didn't completely love the way they work. A few reviewers were disappointed that the lights aren't controllable. They light up at night whether anyone is home or not, using electricity. They also turn on when the surrounding natural light is low. "We only want them to go on when it's completely dark, like in the middle of the night," one reviewer said. "I will say that the price at Costco was much better than anywhere else, so we are willing to keep them."

Costco's price is significantly cheaper than the $69 price at Amazon or the $63 price directly from the SnapPower website for a three-pack. However, if you want some other color options, Amazon does offer the product in ivory or white, while Costco doesn't give you a color choice other than white. SnapPower's website has white, ivory, light almond, and black colors available.

Costco has LED outlet covers available for duplex, decor (or decora), and GFCI style outlets (although the GFCI design was out of stock at the time of this writing). Each type of outlet has a different shape, meaning you need a cover that will match your outlet's design. Additionally, these wall plates are only designed for use with plugs, not light switches.
