Turn The Dandelions In Your Yard Into The Cutest Garland

If your lawn is covered in dandelions right now, you might be wondering whether the benefits of having dandelions in your yard outweigh the downsides. But if you love a whimsical DIY garland as much as we do, you might just be happy to see them popping up outside. We're going to wait until just the right moment to capture them and make a simple, cute garland that will elevate our spring decor.

Dandelions bloom as bright yellow flowers, but soon after, they close up into a little pod. At that point, you might see a bit of white tuft sticking out of the top. That's the cotton candy-textured white seed heads that are about to pop open. When the yellow blooms close, that's when you can pluck them and string them up for the most magical garland decoration. So before you decide to stop dandelions from taking over your yard or garden completely, get out there and gather up as many as you can.

This eco- and budget-friendly DIY is also a great way to get the kiddos involved. Who doesn't love making memories of nature-inspired crafts that result in fantastic seasonal decor? All you'll need for this project, besides dandelions, is a needle and thread, scissors, and a bottle of hairspray.

How to DIY a whimsical spring garland using dandelions

This garland is a fabulous way to decorate your home for spring on a budget. Once you see the yellow dandelions close, pick as many as you want, based on how long you'd like the garland to be. Gather them all up, and gently place them at your workstation — a kitchen table works great. Using scissors, cut the stem off each one right at the base of the flower.

Measure a piece of thread as long as you want the garland to be, and cut it to size. Use it to thread a needle, and then slide the needle into the flower, starting at the base where you cut the stem. Push the needle through, and pull it out of the top of the flower. Repeat until all flowers are strung on the thread. Gently space them out equally across the thread.

Secure the garland in place wherever you desire — in a window is especially nice, as the sunlight will shine through them. You can create a small loop at each end of the thread and hang the loop on a nail or hook. It will take a day or two for all of them to fully open as gorgeous white puffs. Once they do, spray them with hairspray to keep them open and held together so all the little white seeds don't fall off and ruin the garland. You can hold a piece of paper or another material against the wall or window behind the garland as you spray to keep the hairspray from getting on anything other than the dandelions. Make sure to get hairspray on all sides of the flower.
