Don't Toss Candle Wax Scraps — Use A Toilet Paper Roll To DIY A Brand New One

It's good practice to find creative ways to repurpose clutter in your home rather than throw it away or leave it sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Before you toss a spent candle, consider using it for a simple DIY project. Better yet, if you have a handful of colorful candle ends, you can craft a new, one-of-a-kind candle with a few simple supplies. Basically, you'll break up the leftover wax into pellets and use a toilet paper roll and some fresh white wax to form a new candle. There are a few methods you can use to harvest wax stuck to a candle container for this DIY. Bonus: If you want to reuse the candle container, either for your new candle or something else, simply clean it with vinegar until it sparkles.

For this project, you'll first need to collect some candle wax scraps. If you have leftover taper or pillar candles, simply break them up into smaller chunks about the size of a dime. Removing leftover candle wax from a jar is a little trickier, but doable. If the glass is thick, boil some water and pour it directly into the container. The water will melt all the wax along the bottom and sides of the glass, forming a pellet of wax at the top of the water. Allow it to cool and pop out the pellet. Stick a thin glass container in the freezer overnight, then peel the wax off the sides. You'll also need some TooGet Paraffin Wax Pellets or MicCai White Natural Beeswax Pellets, some wicks, a toilet paper roll, and a scrap of cardboard. Tools-wise, get a wax melting pot, a glue gun, and a pack of Dingpai Stainless Steel Candle Wick Centering Devices.

Crafting a new candle from wax scraps and a toilet roll mold

To prepare your mold, glue one end of the toilet roll to the scrap of cardboard. Punch a hole through the scrap cardboard in the center of the toilet paper roll. Use the wick centering tool to suspend the wick over the other, open end of the toilet paper roll, then feed the end of the wick through the hole in the cardboard base. Tape it in place, and fill the toilet paper roll with your wax scraps. If you haven't already, melt your white wax in your candle wax melter. Slowly pour the melted white wax into your toilet paper roll and allow it to set. Once the white wax has solidified, carefully peel the cardboard away from the candle. You'll be left with a unique speckled pillar candle. Make lots — you'll never run out of beautiful ways to decorate your home with candles!

If you don't have all the fancy candle-making tools, you can DIY them. To make a wick holder, tape together two disposable bamboo chopsticks at one end and feed the wick through the open end into the middle. Craft sticks should work, too. Likewise, you can substitute a double-boiler for a professional wax melter. Fill a saucepan with 2 inches of water. Once the water is simmering, place a heat-safe bowl on top of the saucepan. Place the wax beads into the bowl and watch them melt. Pieces of vibrantly colored old candles contrast best with the white wax — whether that's one color or a combination of two or three hues for a terrazzo effect. If you're using multiple colors, mix them up inside the toilet roll for a chunk candle vibe or go for a geometric look with distinct layers of color.
