Say Goodbye To Boring Bedrooms: The One Color To Avoid In 2026

Homeowners are ready to paint the room red. Or, at least a nice shade of olive green, butter yellow, or a dusty pink. Because just like its predecessor millennial gray which divided people, the sad beige era is over. For several years, varying shades of off-white, taupe, ivory, and eggshell dominated both home design and Instagram feeds, but now, experts say that people are ready to wake things up a bit. Cool white or beige palettes "may look clean," Marlaina Teich, the founder of Marlaina Teich Designs told The Spruce in 2025, "but they often feel flat and uninviting in a room that should feel restful."

Even in a space that's designed to set a calming tone so that you can unwind and log those all-important hours of sleep, it's possible for an area to feel too relaxed and quite simply a bit blah. Which is why Susan Hill, founder of Susan Hill Interior Design, is no longer taking plain-hued gray and white bedding lying down, predicting those more basic linens will soon be put to bed. As she put it to The Spruce, "There's no interest when there is no layering of pattern, texture, and color."

How to play with color in your bedroom

Okay, so you've stepped away from the beige. How do you fill in the blanks? One chic color trend you'll see everywhere in 2026 is blue. Not only has it been scientifically proven to set a calming vibe, there's a wide range of hues to select — everything from light powder shades to rich jewel tones.

Creamy caramel is also taking over beige and white to drip its way into interiors. A calming paint trend, the shade is not quite chocolate brown, but definitely a notch more saturated than beige or taupe with a rich warm feel. Plus, caramel isn't yet popular enough to have already taken up residence in countless living rooms, making it a more unique choice.

And if neither of those shades lights you up, design pros swear you can still keep it in neutral. Colors like butter yellow, mauve, sage, and earthy pink strike that same muted, laidback vibe, but add a bit more depth and visual interest. You can also play with texture to keep an otherwise beige, cream, and khaki space from being all one note. Even in more natural shades, a fluffy throw pillow, light and airy linen curtains, textured wallpaper, or an upholstered headboard can elevate your sleep space beyond the basic for a room that's anything but boring.
