With AC repairs and replacements getting so expensive, some homeowners living in areas with cooler summers might consider ditching a balky, older central air conditioning system and choose to install a window air conditioner in a small room they use often, such as a bedroom. Rather than cooling the whole house, they can just run the window AC unit when and where it's needed. Some people are also choosing to use a window air conditioner to supplement the central AC unit in areas with hot, humid summers.

If you're in the market for purchasing a window air conditioner to add to a small room, the product testing experts at Consumer Reports can help. When testing units made to cool a small room measuring 100 to 250 square feet, Consumer Reports selected the LG LW6023IVSM unit as the best option in 2026. The LG unit received a significantly higher score than the other 23 window ACs made for small rooms that Consumer Reports tested, surpassing the second-highest model's score by more than 11%. It had a 25% higher score than the third-highest product on the list, which shows how significantly it outperformed the other options.

Amazon offers the LG LW6023IVSM for $399, although you may find it on sale. When choosing the right size of window AC for your space, a 6,000 BTU AC unit (like the LG LW6023IVSM) should have enough cooling capacity for a room of 150 to 250 square feet.

Why CR named the LG window AC a top choice for small rooms

The Consumer Reports testers gave the LG LW6023IVSM above-average scores in every testing category when compared to other models made for small rooms. The LG unit received a perfect score in its ability to deliver the desired temperature to the room according to the testing team, doing so faster than similarly sized window air conditioners. Of the 24 models tested, it was the only small-room window AC to receive a perfect score in this category.

The LG product also received a perfect score in its ability to maintain performance during periods of brownouts or low-voltage situations. It received near-perfect scores in terms of its noise generation on both high and low cooling settings. Only one other small-room window AC had better noise-generation scores than the LG LW6023IVSM in the Consumer Reports testing.

The LG window air conditioner offers a 6,000 BTU inverter compressor, which controls the motor speed to cool the room as fast as possible without needing to cycle. Using an inverter compressor in the design helps with energy conservation. It was the only small-room model in the CR testing with this technology. The inclusion of an inverter compressor helps to give the LG LW6023IVSM a Combined Energy-Efficiency Rating (CEER) of 15.5, which is significantly higher than the minimum standard required by the Department of Energy (DOE) — 12.8 as of 2026. The LG unit's CEER rating is significantly better than the other small-room window ACs on the Consumer Reports list and is more comparable to larger, medium-room window ACs.

Issues with the LG unit that may leave you feeling the heat

Although the LG LW6023IVSM received high marks from the Consumer Reports testing team, a couple of concerns exist. One of the key downsides of window air conditioners occurs when selecting one that's too small for the room where you're using it. Although the LG unit is recommended to cool small rooms up to 250 square feet, it may struggle to cool a room of this size if the room receives a lot of sunlight through windows. Such small rooms may need units with more BTUs than the LG window air conditioner.

Although the Consumer Reports testers gave the LG window AC above-average marks for being easy to use, its weight of 63 pounds might complicate installation for one person. Of the other 23 small-room window air conditioners on the CR list, only two weigh more than the LG LW6023IVSM, and the majority weigh less than 50 pounds. Additionally, among the 24 window air conditioners made for small rooms on the CR list, the LG LW6023IVSM has a higher suggested price than all but three models.

If you have an odd-sized window opening, the LG LW6023IVSM might not work for you. It requires a double-hung window design with a width between 22 and 36 inches. Most of the small-room window ACs on the Consumer Reports list require similar dimensions, but a few will fit in openings smaller than 20 inches wide or greater than 40 inches.
