For many crafters and DIYers, the best projects are the ones that come from just a few simple everyday items. These are the projects we do just for the fun of it, whether it's making a dollhouse out of popsicle sticks or shoe storage from scrap wood. Many of the most successful DIYs are the ones made with affordable purchases, like mini jute planters, that only require three things to make. You'll need jute, glue, and two-sided tape for this project, as well as a couple of everyday items most people already have in their kitchen, including some kind of container and plastic wrap.

Two-sided tape makes this a renter-friendly project, since options like 3M Heavy Duty 1-inch Mounting Squares can be removed from the wall without damaging the drywall or paint. To make the mini planter with glue and jute, start with a container the size you want your planter to be. This is just the mold and will come out after the coiled jute dries, so the first step is to wrap the outside with a piece of plastic wrap.

For jute, MERIANE Nature Jute Twine comes in a variety of thicknesses so you can get just the look you want. (You can use the leftovers to make a chic jute bowl.) After you have the plastic wrap on the container mold, apply Mod Podge to the bottom of the mold, coating the outside so the jute will stick to it, and then you're ready to start coiling.

To start wrapping the mold, make a coil between your thumb and fingers about 1 to 2 inches across and press it to the bottom of the mold. Continue to wrap the jute evenly until it covers the bottom. Then, keep wrapping around and around up the sides until your mini planter is the height you want, adding Mod Podge as you go if needed. Trim and secure the end of the jute with extra glue and let the planter dry completely overnight. Once dry, pull the container mold out of your new planter and either trim the plastic back or peel it away. Stick a piece of mounting tape to the outside then use it to mount the basket on a wall.

Whether you make a small planter or a larger hanging basket using this technique, jute baskets don't have to be expensive. A planter made with coiled jute offers a warm, cozy vibe and is a great way to bring a boho aesthetic to your decor, but you can make these with many different types of twine, rope, or fabric.

Keep in mind that some types of jute and twine turn colors when they get wet, so if you plan to use these for live plants, it's best to water the plants at the sink and put them back in the jute hangers after they drain. Another idea is to use plastic bottles for the mold and leave them in place to make your planters more waterproof.
