The Beautiful Upgrade That Can Illuminate Your Driveway And Elevate Its Look

Illuminating your driveway brings several benefits. You'll be able to see things that might otherwise trip you up in the dark, there will be fewer shadowy places for burglars to lurk, and the lighting will add character to your home's exterior. Low-level and in-ground lights are popular, and for smaller driveways, such an installation could be done affordably with a few well-placed solar lights.

Over on TikTok, content creator @riftwoodworkanddesign shows the other end of the scale, with a long, sweeping driveway that has a unique and beautiful upgrade. It's clear from the outset that this lighting project took a considerable amount of planning, time, and skill. That said, some of its elements could be modified and incorporated into other driveway layouts that can boost curb appeal. Even at a less dramatic scale, they could still produce a terrific visual impact.

While the construction methods aren't shown in the creator's video, we can make some assumptions. The main uprights are hollow, brick-built pillars. They have been painted white, and carriage-style lamps have been fitted to their tops. About two-thirds of the way up the pillars, rustic wooden beams emerge on either side. These hide a secret that really elevates the look of the driveway beyond the norm.

How this driveway lighting project was put together and what you'd need to recreate it

In this case, rather than relying on solar power, cable has been laid along the edge of the driveway. Not only does this ensure lighting in all conditions, but it has also been used to provide at least one power outlet. It's not clear whether the wooden beams go all the way through the post or are separate, but we can see that they have been carved out to accommodate downlighting. It's an outdoor trend that's been taking over this year. The result is that the edges of the driveway are lit, in addition to the lamps above providing more light along the length of the driveway.

If you're considering DIYing something similar, you'll need to have several different skill sets. You'll need to be a competent bricklayer to build the pillars. Digging a trench for the cable only takes hard work, but outdoor wiring demands knowledge of important safety issues and local code regulations. The beams could have most of the material removed with a chainsaw or a large drill bit then finished by hand. Alternatively, you could screw planks together to make long boxes. In most cases, illuminating a driveway as extensive as the one shown is perhaps a job best left to a team of professionals. However, depending on your DIY abilities, you could take elements of the design and use them as inspiration for your own beautiful upgrade.
