Ditch Bins & Baskets: An Alternative To Blanket Storage That Keeps Them Off The Floor

Blankets are the cherry on top for a good night's sleep or a movie marathon from the comfort of your bed. But sometimes, these large, snuggly covers end up in bins or baskets on the floor, where they tend to accumulate more dirt and dust over time, and take up precious walking space. If you want a cozy and better way to keep your blankets organized, try using a hammock. You can hang one in a spare corner in your room or above your bed, maximizing vertical space while keeping your blankets within reach.

You will need a hammock designed to be hung from ceilings or corners, not hammock chairs that may take up more space. For starters, you can work with a boho-style macrame hammock that you can get on Amazon for about $33. Alternatively, mesh hammocks are a budget-friendly option, given their smaller build and simpler style —  like this stuffed animal hammock on Amazon for about $10, which you can easily repurpose for overhead blanket storage. You will also need a hammock hanging kit, which costs around $10. The kit should include two eye bolts or pad eye plates, two snap eye hooks, and heavy-duty mounting screws that you can install using a power drill.

How to store your blankets in a hammock

Once you have decided where you'll install your blanket hammock, you need to measure the appropriate hang distance to avoid stretching. If you will install it across two walls, try to measure between nine and 12 feet, or shorter if you will install it diagonally. Install the eye bolts or pad eye plates securely before affixing the snap eye hooks and finally, the hammock itself.

To make the most out of the hammock's space, store your cozy throw blankets by rolling them instead of folding them flat. Rolled blankets are easier to stack together in open storage like hammocks, and you wouldn't have to worry about blankets unfolding as you grab one, especially if you secure your rolled blankets with fabric ties or garters. If your new blanket storage looks a little too vacant, add a few plushies or throw pillows beside the blankets — the soft, layered look can turn your bedroom into a cozy paradise.
