Woman Uses Chunky Yarn To DIY The Cutest Throw Pillow In Only Minutes

Good accent pillows can be hard to find. Although there is no shortage of designs, shapes, colors, and sizes for the couch accoutrements, finding one that matches your personal style or home motif can be a challenge. When store selections fail to provide the perfect pillow, you can always resort to crafting your own home decor piece, just like Instagram user and designer Rhi (@interhiors) did. Potentially bringing back a second wave of the Knot Pillow Trend from 2022, Rhi creates her own rotund accent pillow using a wad of cloth or stuffing, fabric, and chunky yarn. Her DIY dupe of expensive designer knot pillows captured the attention of her followers, prompting her to film an instructional video on how to make it. Though it looks luxe and store-bought, the cute rotund throw pillow was handmade in less than 10 minutes.

Using Rhi's instructional video, you, too, can be the owner of one (or several) spherical pillows that can add a ton of visual interest to your couch and living room. All you'll need for this easy, 10-minutes-or-less craft is fabric, stuffing or spare cloth, and chunky yarn. The thicker the yarn, the easier the pillow will be to craft. Michaels Bernat® Blanket Big™ Yarn is one of many thick yarn skeins that would work for this DIY. It comes in a variety of colors and is made from a soft chenille fabric that is perfect for a pillow. A 32-yard skein sells for $9.79.

How to craft your own knotted ball pillow

Start by creating the base for your throw pillow. This can be done by wadding up spare fabric, bundling it together to form a ball shape, and wrapping it in cloth to maintain its shape. You can also form the shape and base of the throw pillow by using polyfill stuffing secured and bundled in cloth. With the foundation of your pillow formed, you'll start wrapping your thick yarn around it to create the knotted design. Wrap the first layer of yarn around one side of your cloth ball, making sure you cover it completely. Then, cover the other side of your ball by wrapping the yarn in the opposite direction, crossing it over the first layer. For a well-rounded, neat throw pillow, make sure you wrap the yarn around the ball an equal amount of times on each side.

Finish up your knotted throw pillow by wrapping one final layer of chunky yarn on the inner portion of the pillow. After adding the second layer of yarn, tuck the end of it into the side opening of the ball, pull it through the opening, and wind the yarn around the ball a final time so it is perpendicular to the layer you just made. The final layer should be wrapped over one side of yarn and under the other, making it look like a giant knotted ball. Once fully wrapped, tuck the remaining ends of the yarn into the cushion and straighten out the rows of yarn so that there are no gaps to expose the wadded ball of fabric inside it. Make a bunch of these whimsical, uniquely-shaped pillows in different sizes, adding them to your couch to make your living room much cozier and visually interesting.
