Not Tupperware, Not Rubbermaid: Consumer Reports Names Their Top-Rated Food Storage Brand For 2026
If you like the idea of saving money on groceries by shopping at a membership warehouse retailer but aren't sure what to do with the large portions of food, you may need to invest in products that help you organize and store items you buy in bulk. Finding just the right storage options can be a challenge, though. My grandma used to wash out old plastic food containers and reuse them, but you might be interested in a safer solution with see-through containers and lids.
Information from Consumer Reports can help. The independent, non-profit organization offers purchasing advice after studying and testing thousands of products in various categories each year. The organization recently put together a report on food storage containers, studying nearly three dozen different products. Storage brands like Rubbermaid and Tupperware may be household names, but neither topped the Consumer Reports list. Instead, the container product that received the highest score from Consumer Reports is the 34-ounce IKEA 365+ Food Storage Container, which also received a "CR Recommended" designation from the organization. The rectangular 34-ounce container is available for $6 at IKEA. The retailer also offers a square-shaped 41-ounce product for $6 and a rectangular-shaped 20-ounce version for $5.
The container is made of oven- and microwave-safe glass. A transparent polypropylene plastic lid (that is not oven-safe) clips onto a raised lip at the top of the glass. A silicone rubber gasket along the interior edge of the lid prevents leaks. The leak-proof lid and sturdy container are key reasons why people are making the switch to glass food storage options.
Advantages of storing food in IKEA's glass containers
IKEA carries many high-quality products at budget prices, although the retailer is best known for popular products like indoor furniture, home decor, and rugs. It also sells kitchenware and tableware products that consistently receive favorable customer reviews.
Focusing on the IKEA glass food containers, the Consumer Reports laboratory testers gave the product high marks for durability, ease of use, and quality of the container's seal. Two other food storage products that CR tested received overall scores close to the IKEA product, but the other 32 products on the Consumer Reports list had scores significantly lower than what IKEA received. The IKEA container products were the only models on the list that received both CR Recommended and CR Smart Buy designations.
At the IKEA website, more than 4,700 customers have left reviews, but only about 1.5% of them gave the product a one-star review. Almost 94% of customer reviewers gave it a four- or five-star review. "I love that I can freeze leftovers in the container, then bake in it to reheat," one IKEA customer reviewer said. "The lids are tight. I marinate veggies in them and turn it upside down with no leaks." Another reviewer said the price for these containers beats other brands of similar glass products, such as from Pyrex.
Why some customers dislike the IKEA food storage containers
The Consumer Reports testers had nothing negative to say about the IKEA glass food storage containers. Although most of the customer reviews on the IKEA website also gave these products positive reviews, some reviewers raised a few concerns.
One of the most common complaints from customer reviewers was that the glass containers do not fit tightly inside each other to simplify stacking them, which creates problems when storing them between uses. "They just awkwardly get stuck in each other without really nesting," one customer reviewer wrote on the IKEA website. "They end up taking a lot of cupboard space."
Several other customer reviewers mentioned that the plastic lids and clips were not sturdy enough and would crack or break loose, failing to match the durability that the glass containers offer. Some customers who didn't experience broken lids said they thought the lid was difficult to close, as the tabs required a lot of force to activate. One customer reviewer even eventually broke the lid because of the force required.
