Review: I Spent Two Nights Snuggled Up With Bedsure's Organically Grown Bamboo Viscose Sheet Set

Raw phyllo dough sheets are cool to the touch, feel silky, and have a bit of heft to them, which you wouldn't expect at a glance. As bizarre as it sounds, this edible treat came to mind when I unfurled Bedsure's PureWoven Organically Grown Bamboo Viscose Sheet Set for a first feel. My 300-thread-count set, which Bedsure provided to House Digest in exchange for an unbiased review, is unlike any other cloth I've handled before — so soft! 

The product's Amazon listing touts not only this silky softness, but a no-slip design that accommodates mattresses up to 18 inches deep and moisture-wicking fabric to help spare you those sweaty, sleepless nights. Regarding the last point, what really caught my eye is its Qmax value — a quantifiable metric used by the bedding industry to detail how cool-to-the-touch a fabric is. The PureWoven Organically Grown Bamboo Viscose Sheet Set lists a Qmax of 0.416, which industry literature indicates should be good for an instant cooling effect befitting a performance textile.

And yes, this product is made from viscose derived from bamboo, which typically relies on a cocktail of chemicals to produce. However, I was impressed to see that it holds an OEKO-TEK Standard 100 certification, which ensures it is "Made with chemicals safer for human health and the environment," according to the listing. At $122.99 (originally $149.99) for my white California king-sized set, this product certainly has a lot to prove. Its Amazon reviews are reassuringly high at an average of 4.5 stars, but as for my verdict ... well, I'll just have to sleep on it.

For this product review, my family and I (including our dogs) tested the sheets during the summer in a home without air conditioning and slept on them for two nights with a couple of naps in between.

Prior to using them, I followed the care instructions and ran the sheets through the washer on a gentle cycle in cold water before tossing them in the dryer on the cool, tumble dry setting. (The presence of our dogs in our bed will hasten how often we wash our bedsheets.)

Like all textiles I purchase, these bamboo viscose sheets from Bedsure went into the wash soon after unboxing them. However, I noticed Bedsure's washing instructions made them higher maintenance than our cotton sheets. A cool, solo wash with plant-based detergent comes first, followed by line drying in the shade or machine drying on low. I opted for machine drying, since our laundry lines are in full sun. Unfortunately, these special care requirements might turn off the chronically busy, and even I can see myself eventually ignoring these steps, despite the recommendations.

However, I was excited to test out the cooling effect Bedsure claimed its sheets could provide. My husband and I have different nighttime temperature needs; he runs hot, and I run cold. But we both noticed the refreshing coolness as we snuggled in, and he reported all-night comfort. Strangely enough, even with the noticeable cooling sensation, the sheets kept me as warm as I needed to be.

Some may wonder if deep pocket sheets are right for their mattress, but I found they were a favorite feature of mine during this review. Bedsure's fitted sheets have 18-inch corner pockets, and the elastic strap reinforces it, making the sheet much more likely to stay in place with normal nighttime movement. We all know how unkempt your bed can look when your fitted sheet slips from the corners, so I was really happy to see that this design does work, even with one to three dogs in my bed.

After a preliminary washing and a weekend of nights and naps, the household consensus is that Bedsure makes a mighty fine product — even the dogs appeared pleased. It kept us cool and cozy, and the fitted sheet stayed in place wonderfully. However, before purchasing, I do recommend taking a scroll through the reviews to determine if this product is right for you.

Although many of the one-star reviews for this product complained about quality, to keep your bamboo sheets soft, it's important to follow care instructions. As such, you might want to take into consideration that some of the customers complaining of pilling fabric might not have properly followed the guidance. Since 80% of Amazon purchasers awarded the sheets five stars, with a further 9% of reviews pulling in four stars, that adds up to a lot of positive testimonials. Add this one to the pile!
