Not Baskets Or Bowls: The Unexpected Thrift Store Find That Makes A Cute Catchall

Having a catchall bowl on your console table is a great way of making your entryway more functional. All the better if you manage to find a pretty one to store your keys, loose change, extra hair ties, and hand lotion. But if you're bored of your current dish and don't wish to spend a ridiculous amount on a high-end basket or bowl, repurpose an unexpected thrift store find: a vintage handkerchief. It'll look cute and won't cost you much time or money. You just need to shape it into a catchall dish with some glue.

But to ensure it looks unique and matches the vibe of your entryway console or living room coffee table, choose a hanky after careful consideration — don't buy the first one you see on sale. And while its design and color will depend on your preferences, check for mysterious spots before finalizing a piece. One or two marks is fine as long as you can identify the stain and remove it. However, don't pick one with spots all over, no matter how good the deal is. You also don't want to bring home yellowed fabrics, especially ones with a white base, since they can be difficult to restore.

Once you have a handkerchief, see what types of glue you have on hand. You'll need a craft adhesive, like Mod Podge, for this DIY. Moreover, grab a big glass bowl (this will serve as your catchall's mold), a wide container (can be glass or plastic), a little bit of water, a foam brush, old newspapers, a roll of plastic wrap, and a pair of gloves to keep your hands mess-free.

How to transform a thrifted handkerchief into a catchall dish

Start by handwashing your thrifted handkerchief, and set it aside to air-dry. Afterward, get the container and add a few tablespoons of Mod Podge to it. The consistency should be a bit runny so the hanky can soak in the adhesive. If it seems too thick, pour in a little water and stir it well to get the right consistency. Now, drop your hanky in the water and glue mixture and let it stay submerged for about half a minute. In the meantime, lay down a few old newspapers on your workstation and cover them with a thin layer of plastic wrap. This will keep your hanky from bonding to the paper beneath.

Once the time is up, turn your bowl upside-down. Additionally, take the hanky out and gently squeeze out the excess. Next, splay it out on the bowl and work out the wrinkles if you want a smooth finish, or add in some more for a dramatic look. Give it a couple of hours to dry. Then, brush on the glue-water solution two to three times to help it solidify and retain the shape of the bowl. Don't forget to let it dry between each application. When you're satisfied, take your hanky off the bowl and shape the corners as you like. Now, let it dry some more prior to putting your catchall dish to use. In case you want it to look luxurious, apply a thin layer of paint (the color should complement the hanky) or glitter glue to the edges and seal the inside with a glossy finish, such as with the Mod Podge Super Thick Gloss.
