How To Repel Mosquitoes Naturally With A Woodsy Scent They Can't Stand

Mosquitoes can be a real bother. They breed fast in warm weather, and before you know it, your property is swarmed with them, and you have bites. Mosquito bites can leave itchy, swollen welts that are annoying to scratch. Plus, bites from certain types of mosquitoes can cause diseases like dengue fever, malaria, West Nile virus, and many other viral infections. While there are clever ways to keep mosquitoes away from your home, many aren't doable for most people and sometimes do not work. Even simple DIY mosquito traps and repellents can be hit or miss. For a low-effort solution that smells good and works like a charm, consider using pine essential oil as a natural mosquito deterrent.

Pine essential oil has a distinct woodsy aroma that can make a room, patio, or any outdoor area smell like a forest. Now imagine enjoying this crisp scent while staying mosquito bite-free. According to a 2005 study published in the Journal of Vector Borne Diseases, pine essential oil offers 97% to 100% protection against some mosquito species, including the malaria-carrying Anopheles culicifacies, for about nine to 11 hours. The same research study found that pine oil applied to heated mats could also provide significant protection for seven to 10 hours. With this in mind, pine oil is a great option for warding off different mosquito species.

How to make your own pine essential oil repellent

As the mosquito season keeps starting earlier and earlier, one of the best ways to counter these bothersome pests is to arm yourself with bug spray. While it's easy to find commercially available bug sprays that are formulated with pine oil, you can also make your own pine oil repellent. But before you start rubbing it directly onto your skin, you need to know that pine oil is usually sold undiluted. In its concentrated form, the oil can be dangerous to the skin, resulting in possible irritation and contact dermatitis. It can also irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Experts recommend speaking with a doctor before using pine oil in case you may be allergic.

To make your own spray, you will need a small glass spray bottle, pine essential oil, and a carrier oil, like jojoba or coconut oil. Pour 2 tablespoons of carrier oil into the container, then add 10 to 15 drops of pine oil. Close the bottle and shake to combine the two oils. Do not continue using the mixture if your skin becomes irritated after testing the oil. If the dilution doesn't irritate your skin, you can apply it daily for protection against mosquitoes.
