If you've ever had the misfortune of dealing with a cockroach infestation inside your home, then you're probably familiar with the pest control company Raid. After all, you're pretty much guaranteed to find at least a few of its sprays, traps, and other products at your local supermarket or hardware store. What you might not realize, however, is that Raid is part of the SC Johnson family of brands, the same one that owns Drano, Glade, Ziploc, and dozens of other well-known companies. And aside from Raid, it also owns two other popular pest control brands in the U.S.: Stem and Off!
While there is some overlap in these three companies' offerings, there are important differences. Raid's products are designed to kill and repel insects (including ants, roaches, fruit flies, and wasps) from your house. Stem also focuses on pest control, but it aims to offer more natural solutions that are safe for kids and pets. Meanwhile, Off! is known for its personal insect repellents, with a focus on bug bite prevention. Curious to learn more about these two SC Johnson companies and their products? Let's take a closer look at each one.
Stem offers alternative pest control products
Stem, which was launched in 2022, is "designed for people seeking an alternative to conventional pest control solutions," per SC Johnson. In its lineup, you'll find a range of insecticides that are made with botanical extracts, such as lemongrass and geraniol. These products — which are available in different formulas to kill roaches, flies, spiders, and more — are safe to use throughout houses with pets and children when applied as directed, according to the company. It also sells several insect repellent sprays and wipes.
If you'd like to take a more hands-off approach to pest control, Stem has a line of bug trap products as well. One example is the Flying Insects Light Trap Starter Kit, which plugs into a wall socket and attracts gnats, mosquitoes, fruit flies, and other winged insects. The lowest-priced kit comes with one device and one cartridge. Another option, the Flying Insect Fan Trap, uses a fan and UV light to capture bugs.
Off! keeps biting bugs at bay
Off! has been developing and selling personal insect repellents for more than half a century. Off! is perhaps best recognized for its range of DEET bug repellents, which come in a variety of formulas, including sprays, aerosols, and towelettes. In addition to personal insect repellents, the brand makes citronella candles, mosquito coils, and outdoor foggers. Rather than applying these directly to your body, you light them or spray them around your belongings (like chairs and beach towels) to keep mosquitoes away for up to six hours.
If you'd prefer to avoid products that contain DEET, the company now has a Clean Feel Insect Repellent line, which is made with 20% picaridin. According to Off!, these products can keep mosquitoes at bay for up to eight hours. Picaridin can offer similar protection to DEET, but it tends to be less oily and greasy when applied. Plus, it's odorless, which some people prefer to the strong smell of DEET.
