DIY The Cutest Towel Holder By Using An Old Picture Frame

No matter how pretty it may be, staring at a towel holder while brushing your teeth or rinsing dirty dishes can get boring fast. But what if you could stare at the Amalfi Coast, contemporary art, or your favorite dish instead? Or, maybe you'd like to look at your family's adorable faces? Either way, ditch traditional towel holders as there's a cuter way to hang them, as demonstrated by TikTok creator @minhacasaminhasescolhas, who added two handles to the molding (the outer border) of a picture frame, then inserted a wood dowel in between to hold a towel.

Repurposing an old picture frame to keep your bathroom neat and tidy (and in style) won't take a lot of time, or require too much effort. Plus, this DIY is completely customizable, so you can personalize it per your bathroom's or kitchen's décor. Moreover, you don't have to keep looking at the Amalfi coast or the same family photo day in, day out. You can swap it out whenever you want since the frame remains intact.

Better yet, you don't need a lot of money on supplies to execute this cute DIY. An old picture frame you don't like anymore or have multiples of will do. You can even go thrifting if you want a frame with a bit of vintage charm. For the handles, gather two old ones you have in your junk drawer (or thrift them as well). Also, get a small dowel (a wood one from Dollar Tree will work), a few screws, and a power drill. For the picture, print one out in your home office, or cut one to size from an old coffee table book or magazine (bonus points if the pages are glossy and unwrinkled).

The first thing you want to do is remove your current towel holder (loosening a screw should help in most cases). Then, open your picture frame and insert the photo you like. For a unique finish, instead of a print or photo, you can even insert pretty tea (or dish) towels. Just cut one to size and iron it well to work out the wrinkles. Attach the tea towel to the frame's backing with some tape or glue so that the material remains upright and doesn't fold on itself. Also, in case you want to spray paint the frame or stain it in a different color so it better matches your bathroom or kitchen, do it before you insert the art.

With your base ready, position your handles on either side of the frame (stain or paint them prior to this if you like). Ensure both handles are straight and level with each other for a seamless finish. Feel free to use a ruler and pencil for accurate measurements. Now, drill the required holes and screw the handles in place. Finally, loop a wooden dowel through the center of both handles, and your towel holder will be ready for use.

Consider adding a few S-hooks to hang more than one towel at once. That being said, remember, a picture-frame holder like this can only withstand the weight of hand or tea towels. As such, it may fall off if you hang something heavier. If you wish to hang bath towels using this DIY, you'll require a much larger frame and a more sturdy dowel.
