Turn Old, Fallen Monstera Leaves Into Spooky Wall Decor With A DIY

Monsteras are one of the most popular houseplants that people choose to have in their homes. They come in lots of different size options to suit every kind of space, and they are characterized by large, intricate leaf patterns. Like most plants, monsteras shed old leaves as part of the ageing process to make room for new ones. Instead of chucking these fallen leaves in the bin, transform them into the spookiest DIY wall decor, perfect for Halloween season.

Indoor Halloween decor is all fun and games, but it can be expensive and isn't great for the environment. Buying lots of cheap new plastic home decor that gets used only once a year isn't very sustainable. So consider making your own Halloween decor that you can reuse throughout the year with items you already have at home. 

For this monstera plant DIY, all you're going to need is a monstera leaf, a tray of water, some pebbles to weigh down your leaf, a few paper towels to dry it, and a frame to display your spooky new wall decor. Patience is a virtue when it comes to this craft project, as it will take at least three weeks for the leaf tissue to break down, but it's definitely worth the wait!

Take your fallen leaf (if it's yellow but hasn't fallen off yet, remove it with scissors or gently pull at it), and place it in a tray of water so it's fully covered. Weigh your leaf down with a few stones to stop it from floating to the top. Now, the hard part — wait patiently for three weeks until the chlorophyll in the leaf has totally broken down and you're left with see-through tissue. To avoid any nasty smells, change the water at least once a week. Gently peel the tissue away until you're left with a skeleton leaf. Place the leaf onto a bed of paper towels, and allow it to dry fully overnight. Finally, it's time to display your skeleton leaf in a way that fits with the rest of your home decor.

In order for the transparent leaf skeleton to stand out, mount it on black paper. However, you don't have to leave the leaf like this; you can take some metallic spray paint and spray it any metallic shade that you like for a dose of glitz and glamor.
