Transform Old Frying Pans Into Eye-Catching Farmhouse Patio Decor With A DIY

The rustic decor trend just can't be ignored in 2026. Why do we love it? There's a comforting, cozy nostalgia to antique items that have a little scuffing. A welcoming porch or patio is the perfect spot to incorporate some small details that add rustic charm on a budget. With some chalk paint, wax, coffee stain, and farmhouse-inspired paper, you can upcycle an old frying pan into a charming decor piece for about $30, giving your outdoor space some rustic character that invites friends to settle in and stay awhile. TikTok creator @thecutestlittlething shared her process, using different pan sizes and a range of affordable craft supplies. 

To create your own, gather a worn pan or two, sandpaper to scuff the interior surface, chalk paint, chalk paint wax, school glue, waterproof spray acrylic sealer, and some sponge brushes. For the sweetly scented stain that adds a patina look, you will need ground cinnamon, instant coffee, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and cloves. Choosing accents is part of the fun and personalization of this project. Find appealing farmhouse design inspo for the imagery (Etsy has options), outdoor-rated Mod Podge, brown paper gift tags, lace and burlap ribbon, jute twine, rusty tin stars,  farm animal stamps, sepia ink, and hot glue. Lastly, make sure you have Mod Podge Spray Acrylic Sealer and clear Flex Seal to make the entire piece waterproof.

Start by scuffing your pan's interior, then covering it inside, out, and at the base of the handle with Waverly Inspirations Matte Chalk paint in the color "ink." For the second, sealing coat, add some school glue to the chalk paint and brush it onto the pan. Next, use a sponge brush to dab the underside for a final, textured layer. Allow it to dry thoroughly before adding clear and antique chalk paint wax on the outer edges of the pan's interior.

Sprinkle the waxed area with ground cinnamon, rubbing it in to create a rusted effect. Cut your farmhouse imagery to fit the pan's interior, coat both sides with Mod Podge, and press to smooth and adhere. Brush the paper with the "coffee grunge mix," a natural DIY stain made from hot water, instant coffee, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. You can also use brown sugar and baking cocoa to deepen the tone. To make it waterproof, mix isopropyl alcohol and outdoor Mod Podge to prevent mold and mildew buildup; follow with a waterproof spray sealant. Alternatively, print your images on waterproof copy paper, stain with the coffee grunge mix, and follow with the outdoor Mod Podge and acrylic spray after it's dry. 

For accents, continue the charming farmhouse aesthetic with the stamps or paper imagery cut and glued onto the tags, then coat with outdoor-rated Mod Podge for durability. Affix to the pans with hot glue, then tie jute twine around rustic bows of lace and burlap. Test first, but try coating your entire bow with clear Flex Seal to waterproof it. Use hot glue to top with a rusty tin star and then glue the completed bow piece to the joint of the handle and pan. Take the piece outdoors and seal it entirely with Mod Podge Matte Spray Clear Acrylic Sealer.
