Use Old Watering Cans To DIY A Rain Chain Full Of Charm
Rain chains originated in ancient Japan and have been used for centuries as a natural way of recycling rain water. Not only are they practical in terms of water distribution, but they can look and sound lovely, too. Rather than buying one brand new, consider making your own garden rain chain by repurposing old or vintage watering cans, which will add an abundance of charm and character to your outdoor space. You may not have a stash of old metal watering cans ready to be repurposed, but they are a common item to find at antique stores and reclamation yards, so be sure to keep your eye out for them.
To make this whimsical garden feature, you're going to need several metal watering cans, a metal chain in the desired length, a set of pliers, and some wire. Small watering cans, rather than full-sized ones, are preferred for this project as the larger ones can be unwieldy on a chain. Children's watering cans are about the right size for this project, and you can often find them at yard sales.
How to make a rain chain with old watering cans
You may be wondering if there's anything you should consider before buying the chain itself? Copper is considered the best material for a rain chain, it doesn't rust and instead develops a gorgeous green patina over time. Copper itself also feels more luxurious than other options like aluminum or galvanized steel and adds beautiful color to the project, both when it is new and as it ages.
To make your rain chain, measure the length from the top of your gutter to either the ground or your water butt, depending on where you want your rain chain to end. Add 6 inches onto this measurement and cut your chain accordingly. Drill a hole in each watering can so the chain can be pushed through them. To stop the watering cans from sliding down the chain, use your pliers and manipulate a piece of wire to place beneath each can. When you're ready to hang your chain, you can either install a hook next to your gutter, or remove the downspout and install a gutter clip in the existing hole where it would have been connected. The next time it rains, your garden will both look and sound beautiful thanks to your new rain chain.
