He Turns Old Cast Iron Frying Pans Into Useful Kitchen Tools

Add House Digest on Google:

The versatility and durability of cast iron cookware makes them a popular pick among home cooks. They can be used for searing, frying, or baking food. However, there's a way to repurpose cast iron pans that is often overlooked, especially if you're looking to save some kitchen space. TikTok creator @orphanediron shares his unconventional use of cast iron frying pans by turning them into spatulas. The process is surprisingly simple, with the right tools. He just traces the shape of the spatula into the pan, cuts it out, and sands it.

On his account, @orphanediron demonstrates how he converts a variety of cast iron frying pans of different sizes using this technique. This is the perfect way to transform old cast iron frying pans found at the thrift store. The cast iron spatulas have their own benefits home cooks may be drawn to. For example, the heavy weight of the cast iron makes it easier to smash burgers flat and can add trace amounts of iron to food. If this DIY project and its benefits sound appealing you may want to give it a try yourself.

How to turn a cast iron pan into a spatula

While @orphanediron shared the basics of how to complete this DIY, you may need more detailed steps if you're planning to give the project a try. First, let's dive into the necessary materials. You will need an old cast iron pan you're willing to cut into pieces. If you do not already have one on hand, consider searching a thrift store or online second-hand sellers. You should be able to snag one for an affordable price that way. To safely cut your spatula out of the frying pan, you'll need safety glasses, gloves, an electric saw with a circular metal-cutting blade, and an orbital sander. You should have experience with a circular saw and sander before jumping into this project. Keep in mind that each cast iron pan makes just one spatula, since the original handle will become the spatula handle.

To start out, first use a white permanent marker and a measuring tool to draw the shape of the spatula on the outside of the frying pan. The measuring tool will help you achieve even parallel lines. While wearing the appropriate safety gear, using a circular metal cutting blade, cut along the white lines you made to create your spatula. You will then be left with sharp, jagged edges around your spatula. To fix this, your next step is to sand the edges smooth with an orbital sander. Start out with 60 grit before working your way up to 180 grit for the smooth finish you need. When you're done creating your cast iron spatula, clean it and season it by coating the outside with a small amount of cooking oil. This is the best way to season cast iron. Bake the spatula at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour to set the oil. Allow it to cool completely in the oven before the first use.
