Your Old Towel Rack Isn't Cutting It: DIY A Cuter, Boho One

You love your bathroom space, but that old towel rack is kind of killing the vibe. You've already added a beautiful boho shower curtain, hung as many potted plants as you could fit in the window, and snagged a gorgeous wicker basket from the thrift shop to really play up the natural elements. A whimsical towel holder would put your boho-inspired bathroom over the top.

Luckily for us, Made by Kry shares a fun DIY hanging towel holder on Instagram that's easy to recreate. It's made from a simple wooden-beaded hoop suspended by a thick rope that hangs from the ceiling. You can drape your hand towel on the hoop as it hangs next to your sink. This is a cute twist on the traditional towel holder and a creative way to add boho chic to your bathroom. Plus, there are several ways to customize this DIY to make it work in your unique space.

For this project, you'll need a metal hoop, wooden beads, thick rope, and a ceiling hook. You'll also need masking tape, a drill, and a pair of wire cutters suitable for cutting the metal hoop. A measuring tape might also come in handy. Optional supplies include paint and large decorative beads.

How to DIY a boho-inspired towel holder for your bathroom

Gather all your supplies and let's get started. The first thing you want to do is use the wire cutters to cut the metal hoop. This creates an opening where you can begin threading the wooden beads onto the hoop. Continue until the entire hoop is covered, except the last inch or two. To close the hoop, simply overlap the cut ends and wrap masking tape tightly around the connection to hold them together. Don't worry about how it looks, because the rope will end up covering that spot.

Now set the hoop aside and grab your ceiling hook. A hook screw with a toggle bolt can work well for drywall ceilings, while a screw hook designed for wood may be suitable if you're installing it directly into a ceiling joist. To install it, drill a hole in the ceiling where you want to place the hook, then insert the toggle bolt. Screw the hook onto the bottom of the toggle bolt until it's flush with the ceiling and you're ready to hang the towel holder.

Measure the distance from the ceiling hook down to where you want the beaded hoop to hang. Double that measurement and cut your rope, leaving a little extra length for tying a secure knot. Loop it through the hoop, allowing it to hang on the rope where the masking tape shows. Tie the two ends together and hang the tied ends from the ceiling hook. Now you can twist the two lengths of rope together to create a braided look, making sure the rope covers the taped portion of the hoop.

Tips and hacks to customize your boho hanging towel holder

This boho towel holder is great on its own, but there are several ways to customize it to suit your bathroom. First, you can paint the wooden beads to match your existing bathroom decor. If you're going for a full bohemian look, choose a color from a nice, earthy palette, like blues or greens, or anything along the brown spectrum.

For a clever way to repurpose a macrame plant hanger (without involving any plants), you could use one in place of the plain hanging rope. Tie several plant hangers together to make it longer or cut each segment of the plant hanger and tie them end to end for a long, single braided rope. You can even incorporate large decorative beads into the braid or weave of the macrame rope to really jazz it up.

Finally, you don't want to hang this gorgeous towel holder in all of its bohemian glory and then drape any random old towel over it. To finish the look, opt for linen towels in neutral tones for a natural feel, or choose ones with unique artisan designs. You can source boho-inspired hand towels online or head to your local thrift store. But don't forget to search for local artisan shops, too, for an extra special touch.
