While it can add some scary atmosphere to a movie you're watching as you sit on the edge of your seat, a constantly squeaky door in your home is no fun and can easily get on your nerves — especially if there's no WD-40 in the house and you keep forgetting to pick some up every time you're at the hardware store. However, WD-40 is actually not a long-term recommended fix for squeaky hinges either. But did you know that you can fix squeaky doors using a few kitchen essentials in the meantime? Another one of these temporary fixes you can use is none other than Pam cooking spray.

You see, one of the most common causes of squeaky hinges is lack of lubrication. Without adequate oil around the parts that make up a hinge, these will rub against each other every time you open and close the door. This constant movement causes friction, and this is what results in that particularly annoying squeak. Of course, there are other factors that may contribute to the noise, including corrosion and buildup of dirt, but a quick spray of oil should provide enough lubrication to stop the squeak immediately, while you work out whether the hinges need replacing. And if you do need to replace the hardware, don't throw out the old ones because hinges make the cutest little photo stands.

How to use Pam cooking spray to silence that squeaky hinge

To tackle that annoying squeak, head to the kitchen and grab your can of Pam cooking spray as well as a piece of paper towel or a tissue. Hold the towel under the hinge to prevent the oil from dripping down door, and lightly spray the lubricant over the metal parts. Take the towel and immediately remove any excess oil from the area surrounding the hinge, and then gently open and close the door a few times so all parts of the hardware are well lubricated. Repeat the process with the other door hinges.

Just keep in mind that this is going to fix the problem temporarily but is not a long-term solution. The oil can attract dust and dirt and make the problem worse, or it will need reapplication often, which could result in build-up. However, it is a squeaky door hack that's worth trying when you need to save your sanity, but if you want to solve the problem once and for all, a silicone spray, like this B'Laster Silicone Lubricant, is probably your best bet. It provides excellent lubrication and dries quickly, so it won't attract dirt and dust to gum up your hinges.
