The Dramatic Addition That Adds Value To Your Bathroom, According To HGTV's Property Brothers

The Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott know that the bathroom is one of the most important rooms to renovate in a home makeover. This is because, along with the kitchen, adding certain elements to the bathroom can greatly increase the value of a home.

In an interview with MyDomaine about the best ways to renovate a bathroom, Drew said, "When planning a bathroom design, you need to think [about] style and function." Both brothers go on to discuss which elements should be splurged on and which ones you could save a few dollars with. When it comes to adding a dramatic flare to a bathroom, you may need to spend the big bucks, especially if you decide to add the luxurious feature that Drew included in one of his recent renovations. According to Realtor, he explained that "this is a feature that will add value. Buyers come in here and will see this and will pay more for this house because of this bathroom."

Choose the right stone slabs

When going head to head against his brother, Jonathan, on "Brother vs Brother," Drew Scott knew he needed to go all out. To do so, he added a dramatic look on the walls of the primary bathroom: book-matched slabs. He says, "What I'm really excited about is the huge, book-matched porcelain slab going on the walls. They just scream luxury." He places this feature behind a white tub with rounded edges, which gives the space an extra luxe appearance. Drew continues, saying, "The slab is stunning, it's elegant, it's sophisticated, it looks expensive" (via Realtor.)

According to The Stone Collection, book-matching means installing two or more slabs of engineered stone so that the pattern connects and looks continuous throughout the entire wall. They say that the best types of stone are those with veining or lots of movement, such as marble and granite. However, while this does provide a draw-dropping appearance, it's also quite expensive, as Drew spent over $8,000. At the same time, this feature will increase the value of your home, so the investment upfront may be worth it.

Other dramatic additions

However, while book-matched slabs are gorgeous, they don't practically improve the experience of using the bathroom. If this is your main goal, there's another impressive element you could include: a gorgeous shower. In the interview with MyDomaine, Drew Scott says, "I would splurge by giving a bathroom the most beautiful spa-like walk-in shower. Full height glass doors, steam jets, rain head, and digital controls to regulate the temperature."

On the other hand, if you don't have a large budget for your bathroom renovation but you still want to create an opulent appearance, the Property Brothers recommend adding two elements: mixed hardware and beautiful tiles. Jonathan Scott says, "using brushed brass, nickel, and golds together is totally acceptable in design," and it won't cost you nearly as much as stone slabs or a new shower would. Similarly, Drew says, "You will always be able to find a sale on a great selection of tile. Use this to stretch your dollar when tiling your tub. You could even consider using a small-scale version of the same tile on your bathroom floor."
