The Ceiling Detail The Property Brothers Used For A One-Of-A-Kind Kitchen

Those who want to add a wooden feature to their ceiling usually choose faux or real wood beams. These typically extend from one side of the room to the other, which works to elongate the space and draw attention to the fifth wall. However, as Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott demonstrate, this isn't the only ceiling feature option. In Season 4, Episode 6 of the HGTV show "Property Brothers: Forever Home," they add a wooden trellis above a family's oversized kitchen island, which provides the space with a unique feature.

To create this statement piece, they suspended lumber beams from the ceiling with pieces of rope. This gives the home a more consistent look; as Jonathan said, "The tone from the decorative wood up above ties into the luxury vinyl [floors]," per HGTV. It also draws attention to the center of the large kitchen, providing a focal point for the space. And, because they hang gold light fixtures between the wooden beams, the design creates the perfect mix of an industrial, country, and modern home style.

The benefits of a ceiling trellis

Instead of covering an entire ceiling from one side to the other with wooden beams, the benefit of a ceiling trellis is that it's isolated to one area, which could save you money. You'll need a lot less wood, but it will still make more of a statement. Drew and Jonathan Scott added this design feature because they wanted something that was purely decorative but felt like it was essential to the foundation of the home. "[The homeowner] loved industrial accents like beams and rope, so we wanted to create a feature that felt structural, even though it wasn't," the brothers write (per The Scott Brothers). Further, if your ceiling is especially high, this feature could make this surface look closer to the ground, which could create a cozier feel.

Additionally, just like with wooden beams, this feature is completely customizable to your desires. Maybe you prefer a certain wood tone, or perhaps you like the look of chain instead of rope. All of these elements, as well as the size of the beams and the direction they are hung, can be personalized to create a unique look that can only be found in your home. And, if you're worried about the weight of the lumber, you could opt for faux wood planks instead of real ones. Another option is to turn the wooden feature into extra storage, like in the image above.
