Turn A Basic IKEA MOPPE Chest Into An Adorable Crafting Station

Crafting and DIY projects are a great way to create beautiful things like art journals, scrapbooks, and custom pieces of art. Crafting exploits mean you will need supplies, which can often be a challenge to store in a place that is both easily accessible and attractive to look at. A great IKEA hack using a simple and inexpensive children's MOPPE drawer unit, which costs under $30, may be the perfect solution to creating an adorable and space-saving set-up for all your bits and bobs.

Even better, with just the MOPPE unit and some other great IKEA elements like screw-in sofa legs and some plastic storage hooks and containers, you can create an elaborate storage system that's perfect for all of your crafting supplies and that costs under $70. Its compact size makes it a cute solution for those that lack room for a larger crafting station yet still want to keep everything within easy reach.

Creating a crafting station from a MOPPE chest

Showing off how she built her crafting station, Instagram user @bonnyundkleid begins with several inexpensive products in addition to the MOPPE chest, including the wooden BRYNILEN sofa legs for $30 and the SUNNERSTA hooks and plastic hookable bins for about $5. She begins by removing the drawers and painting the sides and bottom of the MOPPE unit white, which will be turned on its side for the final project. She then screws the sofa legs into the back of the drawer unit, creating a box with deep recesses. These slots are perfect for larger and ungainly items like sheets of scrapbook paper or rolls of wrapping paper

@bonnyundkleid then attaches the hooks and bins to the side, offering places to hang smaller objects. She replaces one of the drawers in the back of the unit with a few well-placed holes of various sizes drilled out for scissors and other tools. She then adds some smaller plastic storage containers that fit easily in the top of the unit while still allowing things to be stored out of sight underneath.

Customizing your MOPPE craft station

There are further ways you can customize your new crafting station, including adding more or less of the original drawers back in and configuring the unit to fit your particular needs. You can also try other sofa leg options from IKEA like the ESSEBODA legs that would work perfectly to elevate the drawer unit and cost just $20. Paint your unit to match your decor or use peel-and-stick wallpaper around the exterior for a bit more pattern.

You can also screw two or more MOPPE chests together to create an even larger crafting station. Depending on the height of your legs, the station can be placed on the floor or on a table within easy reach. You can also attach wheeled casters to make the unit mobile so that it can easily be moved to wherever you may be working. This MOPPE hack is an especially perfect solution for apartments, RVs, and tiny homes where a full arts and crafts studio may not be possible.
