The Easy-To-Make Mistake Jasmine Roth Warns To Avoid During A Bathroom Reno

Bathroom remodels are exciting. You're ripping out anything tired and outdated and refreshing it with what's new and modern. It's always very satisfying to take down strips of fish-themed wallpaper that were hung in the '80s or to chuck a dingy laminate bathroom vanity for an updated white one. However, HGTV's Jasmine Roth sees one common mistake that both designers and amateurs alike make when diving into a bathroom reno, and she urges fans to avoid it if they don't want to regret their choices in a few years. And that's going way too trendy with the design.

While you might have cringed at the under-the-sea motif in the bathroom you inherited when you bought your house, keep in mind that once was wildly trendy. Everyone raced to buy seashell sconces and jars filled with plastic seahorses, but it didn't age well. To avoid that same mistake, Roth urges people to go with a more timeless design. But that doesn't mean your remodel has to be void of any personality! Here's how she suggests to walk the line between the two.

Why Jasmine Roth suggests a timeless design

Chances are you used Pinterest or Instagram as a mood board when researching and designing your bathroom remodel. While both places are a great source of inspiration, they're also a hotbed for emerging fads and micro-trends. Because of that, some of your ideas might feel on-trend at the moment but will feel dated in a few years' time. (Just think back to the chevron craze 10 years ago. Imagine if you had aquamarine chevron wallpaper in your bathroom right now.) "The biggest mistake I see homeowners (and designers) regularly make when updating their bathroom is trying to be too trendy. There's nothing that dates a bathroom quicker than trying to do what's 'in' during the renovation," Roth shared on her blog.

However, that doesn't mean you need to stick to an all-white bathroom with little to no personality. Instead, Roth recommends introducing trends through things that are easily swapped once the novelty wears off. "Don't be afraid to keep it neutral and add your style with accessories like fun mirrors, towels, and bath mats. If you must, add a fun removable wallpaper," she explains. As you can imagine, swapping out a pair of towels is much easier than getting a whole new vanity — and it's cheaper, too. That makes it much safer to experiment with those pieces. In the end, let your personality shine through, but channel it through accents that aren't meant to last years.
