HGTV's Mina Starsiak Hawk Has One Simple Rule For Minimizing Clutter

When decorating your home from scratch, there is so much to play around with in every room. There are many ways to fill a space, but it can quickly become overwhelming and expensive. You can buy everything at once to get the decorating done with, or wait to find unique pieces from different places. Filling your home with multiple items at once can easily make it feel cluttered. Moreover, over time, you will likely find other items that you love and think would make excellent additions to your space. However, continuously buying things and never getting rid of items you don't want or need leads to piles that look messy. HGTV star Mina Starsiak Hawk has renovated many homes with her mother, Karen Laine, and claims using large, minimal décor can help create "wow" statements without the clutter in every room.

In their final episode of "Good Bones," Starsiak Hawk renovates her brother Tad and his girlfriend Anna's Indianapolis home, where she takes the time to discuss a few of her essential renovating tips. Anna discloses her wish to have little things around her house even after living in it for years to tell a story about them, but Starsiak Hawk also states, "What I think you need to go for is less pieces and bigger pieces, so it doesn't feel cluttered," via Realtor

Always go for more oversized décor

Using larger décor pieces reduces mess, whereas having minimal things on a surface reduces a room's visual and physical clutter. For instance, if you have multiple trinkets on your coffee table that don't complement each other or take up too much space, opt for bigger items, such as a vase with flowers, a stack of books, and a candle. On the other hand, if you're decorating an extensive wall, use larger pieces instead of hanging multiple small items. You can display large artwork that takes up most of the wall. You might feel the need to decorate all of your walls, but you don't have to. A statement wall stands out against the negative space and makes the room look tidier.

Reducing clutter with larger items allows you to transform your space from an anxious-inducing environment to a relaxing and inviting home. You won't have to worry about feeling like the house is always messy and needs to be cleaned because of the small items everywhere. While oversized pieces take up more surface area, they're easy to clean and tidy up when out of place.
