Exciting Changes Are Coming To Revolutionize Outdoor Power Tools In 2024

There's certainly a lot of innovation happening with cars and appliances, but what about outdoor power tools? Whether it's a handheld chainsaw or a lawnmower, the items you have in your shed are probably much like those your parents had, perhaps with the upgrade to battery-powered cordless versions. In 2024, though, a number of tool manufacturers are launching new outdoor power tools that aim to offer some key benefits both eco-friendly and easy to maintain. If you're in the market for a new line of outdoor power tools, now may be a good time to buy.

For many manufacturers, there's ample reason to develop sustainable practices within this industry. Gas-powered lawnmowers and other outdoor power equipment produce a substantial amount of air pollution, according to data from the US Environmental Protection Agency. On the other hand, some people may not be interested in traditional battery-powered tools because they tend to be less powerful than gas. Now, new technology is being developed that can resolve both problems: going forward, several outdoor power tool manufacturers have some interesting options to offer consumers, including truly cordless options powered by solar, and power tools which offer overall better functionality. Before you buy your next power tools off Amazon, check out these upgrade options.

Batteries with gas-like power

Next-generation batteries are one of the most sought-after innovative features. If you've ever tried to trim a branch from a tree using a battery-powered saw, you know the frustration that comes from the lack of performance. Two companies have recently launched better-performing batteries.

Dewalt's PowerStack batteries are some of the company's most powerful options. These batteries provide as much as 50% more power and more work per charge than traditional battery-powered tools, according to the manufacturer's website. The added power gets the 5AH battery to 20 volts of power. Thankfully, DeWalt power tools are worth the hefty price tag, making them highly desirable.

Milwaukee's M18 Forge battery is also an improvement over older models. The M18 Redlithium Forge battery is this company's most powerful, and it comes with a fast-charging feature (who hasn't frustratingly run out of power when trimming the grass?). This battery aims to provide more of a gas-like function, though it's not quite the same just yet. The company's website shares that these are high-output, 12.0Ah power batteries that last longer than previous models.

It's also important to note that both companies are only releasing new batteries with more power to them right now. However, they also note that they're working on new power tools that will make the best use of these new batteries. Both Milwaukee and Dewalt are said to be well beyond the other industry brands in these areas.

Sun-powered charging that's efficient

While there have been a number of portable power systems on the market, many are inferior in terms of how efficient or effective they are. New products are going one step further, offering a level of performance that's said to allow even big construction site crews the function and performance they need to quickly and efficiently charge batteries using the sun's power.

One company that's making its products more readily available even for the home user is EGO. That includes their portable solar panel charger for their power station. Consider this the alternative to noisy, gas-hogging generators that you may have tucked into the garage for those times the power goes out. It provides a simple way to charge batteries for outdoor power equipment. In September of 2024, Milwaukee will release the Roll-On 7200W/3600W Power Supply, which offers all-day running power. One nice benefit to these systems is their ability to charge more than one battery at the same time (without having to line your workbench with dozens of charging stations).

More power, less bulk

Another feature to notice in new power tools this year is a shift to smaller sizes and lightweight designs for both your outdoor and indoor projects. As noted, power is everything for these tools, but for some, the bulky, hard-to-balance feel of a battery-powered saw or drill isn't cutting it either. Some of the products launching this year aim to change that by introducing a tool that's compact enough to fit on your tool belt.

Milwaukee's M12 18ga Brad Nailer (for your next roof repair, or siding update on the kid's playhouse) is sure to be easier to work with, since it's smaller overall. This is an excellent feature since it means you can shimmy it into even the tightest of spaces to get an accurate nail in place. This particular model is about 4.6 pounds with the associated battery. The M12 FUEL Jig Saw is another option. Use it for any type of wood-cutting project where you need flexibility and movement. It's powerful and offers great precision without a heavy, hard-to-hold battery weighing it down. Also nice is the ergonomic design of the barrel grip, which also has built-in low-vibration features. Imagine your arm not hurting after cutting out the next science fair project — sounds great, right?
