2 Space-Saving Methods To Fold Underwear For Neat And Tidy Drawers

Underwear is one of those things that you can never have enough of. That is, until you need to get your dresser drawers under control. Despite being relatively small, underwear can end up taking a ton of space in your clothes storage. This can be a more significant issue if you're just lobbing the undergarments into the drawer or folding them inefficiently. Plus, it looks messy, and nobody likes not being able to find their lucky knickers when they need them.

There are tons of storage boxes and drawer organizers available, but these can take up additional space in the drawer, not to mention costing money. The best, free way to get your underwear drawer and bins under control is to employ a space-saving folding method. There's a best way to store all different kinds of clothing, and we searched for some of the best methods that managed to keep underwear looking tidy without taking up a lot of room. We found two that really stood out as the top options: the square-fold and the roll-up. We'll walk you through how to do each of them and which garments they work best for so you can find the right underwear storage method for you.

The square method vs. rolling

First, we have the square folding method, where you'll fold the underwear into — you guessed it — a square. To do this, you'll lay the underwear out flat, and then pull the low-hanging crotch section to the top of the waistband. From here, you just fold one half to the center, and then the other so they overlap, a bit like how you'd fold a towel into thirds. You should be left with a pretty perfect square once you've nailed the process. This is ideal for underwear that has a lower-hanging portion, like thongs and bikini-cut underwear. You can also easily store square-folded underwear in a shoebox or bin, stacked at an angle so you can easily see each pair. If you want to make them even more compact, you can fold the underwear one last time to replicate the Marie Kondo file folding method

Another method we love is the simple roll-up, in which you literally roll the underwear into a little cigar. Rolling your clothing is a great space-saving way to fold your clothes for suitcases, and the same is true for your underwear drawer. To do this, lay the underwear out and fold it so it's in a flat rectangle shape, similar to the square method. For boxer briefs, fold the bottom of the legs to the top of the waistband instead of folding them in half. From there, start rolling the fabric from one end until all of the fabric is wrapped up. This is great if you want to stack the underwear vertically in the drawer as columns or pack it in tightly.
