Jeremiah Brent Says One Interior Design Trend Isn't Going Anywhere Anytime Soon

In a world where micro-trends are beginning to dominate interior design, and what's currently "in" seems to go out of fashion in the span of a few months, some people are looking to create more timeless homes. While experimenting with the checkered print decor trend and squiggle mirrors is all well and good, it can sometimes feel exhausting to learn that some of your favorite pieces are now considered passe. That doesn't mean that you'll immediately send them to Goodwill — but the swift changes can be stressful. So, if you're trying to curate a more timeless approach to your home decor, Jeremiah Brent has one trend that he doesn't think is going anywhere anytime soon — unlacquered brass.

When Elle Decor asked the designer which kitchen trend he thinks has lasting power, Brent replied, "I don't think unlacquered brass is going anywhere." He also had a related, secondary answer, stating, "And I hope the trend of mixing metals continues to live on. The trick to mixing metals is balance." While his answer was centered on the kitchen space, it can also be expanded to other rooms of the house, like the living room. Here's how to utilize it in your own home.

How to decorate with unlacquered brass

Brent's used unlacquered brass in both his own home and for clients, which can serve as inspiration for how to use it in your own space. In one eye-catching example, the designer used a custom unlacquered brass backsplash for a wet bar in the townhouse of an NHL player. The bold look was one you don't see every day, making it unique and memorable. It may be a backsplash material you've been missing out on, but to copy it, you'd need to go with a custom design from a metal fabricator. However, for a similar, lower-cost option, try using laminate with a brass finish, like this sheeting from The Home Depot, for about $12 a square foot.

For easier ways to decorate with brass, focus on finding accent pieces in the metal. For instance, when Brent and Berkus first lived in their New York City home (they moved back after a stint in Los Angeles) their living room had a '70s brushed brass cocktail table. This budget-friendly one from Wayfair for around $150 can give you a similar vintage vibe.

You can also play with the color in the lamp fixtures you buy, whether they're pendants, sconces, or table lamps like this $225 one from High Street Market. Or, experiment with the metal in the kitchen, opting for a brushed brass faucet or cabinet handles and knobs. The unique fixtures will give your home a touch of old-world charm and create a timeless vibe.
