Thrift stores are often filled with beautiful glassware, including stemware, candlesticks, tumblers, plates, and platters. While these pieces are not always useful in their original roles, they can always be enlisted for cool DIY repurposing projects that upcycle thrifted glassware in new ways. Instagram user @halezgarciaathome shows off a stunning way to create a candle platter with thrifted glass and simple taper candles. The result is a beautiful way to decorate your home with candles by creating a stunning fountain-like assemblage with lots of romantic Victorian and boho style.

Thrifted glassware pieces are typically available for under a dollar each, and come in a wide variety of shapes, styles, and colors. You can also customize the candle colors you use to fit your décor. Create a colorful array of differently-hued candles, use all-white or cream candles for a neutral space, or choose black for a fun gothic look perfect for Halloween. Use your candle plate on a mantle, coffee table, or as a centerpiece on a dining table or counter. Or, use it outdoors to light up your backyard patio

Making a candle plate with thrifted glassware

Choose your selection of glassware pieces and a large plate or platter as the base. You will also need several taper candles. The DIYer above recommends using Candlestock Hippy Drippy Candles for their extreme drippiness, though you can also make regular inexpensive tapers more drippy by shaving away the way at the top on a slant before burning. Use some wax to create a well in the glassware pieces, inserting and holding the candles upright until they stand on their own. As you burn the candles, they will drip down and flow into the glassware pieces, creating a beautiful fountain effect.

While the flame does not usually come in close contact with the glass as it burns, make sure any glassware that comes in direct contact with the heat from the flame is designed to withstand high temperatures (crystal candlesticks and small hurricane globes are perfect for this). You can also keep adding new candles as the originals burn, which will layer the wax even more thoroughly on the various levels. For a little extra shimmer, add candle-friendly glitter or glass gems as the wax cools. You can also use glass figures like animals, small statues, rocks, on the platter for the wax to flow over.
